Dodgers News: Mookie to Host Star-Studded Softball Game

Event will be part of "Black Heritage Night"

LOS ANGELES — Dodger fans, mark your calendars for a truly unforgettable night at Chavez Ravine. This Thursday, June 19—Juneteenth for those of you keeping score—the Dodgers are celebrating Black Heritage Night in style—and who better to kick off the festivities than Mookie Betts himself?

Before the Dodgers face off against the San Diego Padres at 7:10 p.m., Betts will be hosting the stadium’s first-ever Celebrity Softball Game, with first pitch set for 5:30 p.m. If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing Grammy winners, NFL legends, and comedy stars all on one diamond—this is your moment.

Mookie’s All-Star Lineup

Betts, a three-time World Series champ and six-time All-Star, will coach one of the celebrity squads, while former NBA standout Matt Barnes takes the reins of the opposing team. Both will also provide live commentary during the game, keeping the energy high and the crowd entertained.

The rosters are as bold as they are diverse. You’ll see big names like:

  • Nelly, Lil’ Wayne, Dom Kennedy, Lizzo, Big Boi, Victoria Monét, and AzChike bringing the musical heat.
  • Terrell Owens, Jordan Love, James Loney, and trailblazing pitcher Mo’ne Davis showing off their multi-sport chops.
  • Crowd-favorite entertainers like Anthony Anderson, Lil Rel Howery, and Karrueche Tran adding their flair to the field.

Players, umpires, and even the fans in attendance will be treated to customized cream-and-black Juneteenth jerseys, featuring a special commemorative patch created by Betts himself. “I’m super excited to host the first celebrity softball game on Black Heritage Night,” said Betts. “It’s going to be a good time with great vibes, and something I hope to do for years to come.”

Music, Food, and a Whole Lot of Culture

The celebration doesn’t stop with the game. The Harmony Project, a local organization that provides music education to underserved communities, will perform along the outfield warning track before and after the celebrity contest.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a party at Dodger Stadium without music from the incomparable DJ Severe, who’ll be spinning walk-up tracks and inning-break beats throughout the event. Fans will also hear from DJ B. Rush, setting the mood for the night.

Craving something to eat? Mookie’s Nashville roots are taking center stage:

  • Nashville hot chicken wings and Mookie’s mac and cheese will be available in Left Field Plaza, Reserve Sections 4 & 31, and Right Field Plaza.
  • Sweet potato pie with whipped cream will be served in Field Section 46 and Reserve Section 2.
  • Wash it all down with a Music City Mule, a specialty cocktail available at bars throughout the park.

Fans who purchase the special Black Heritage Night ticket pack will also receive an exclusive striped Mookie Betts jersey—a collector’s item in the making.

Gates Open Early

To catch all the action, make sure you get to the stadium early. Gates open at 5:10 p.m., with the celebrity softball game starting at 5:30 p.m. sharp.

Whether you’re there for the star-studded lineup, the Southern comfort food, or the chance to celebrate Juneteenth and Black excellence, Thursday’s Black Heritage Night at Dodger Stadium promises to be a night to remember.

Let’s go, Dodgers—and let’s go, Mookie!

Steve Webb

A lifelong baseball fan, Webb has been going to Dodger games since he moved to Los Angeles in 1987. His favorite memory was sitting in an apartment in October 1988 when Gibby went yard against Eckersley in the World Series. Which came about ten minutes after he declared “this game is over!” Hopefully, his baseball acumen has improved since then. He has been writing for Dodgersbeat since 2020.
