With the positive feedback from Clayton Kershaw‘s throwing program and Bobby Miller still making his way back into the starting rotation after some minor league starts, there is a presence missing on the offensive front in Max Muncy. Muncy was placed on the 10-day IL with an oblique strain initially on May 17 and was viewed as just a minor tweak.
As time went on, Muncy was slowly on the road to recovery and even participated in batting practice during the Dodgers road trip to Arizona, but he stated that he felt a “twinge” in his ribcage while swinging. And as of now, he has been shut down from all baseball activity with no clear timetable on his return.
“Not sure frustrating even describes how I feel right now,” Muncy said of the setback. Miguel Vargas was called up to take up Muncy’s spot and even his hitting .250 with one home run and .857 OPS through six games, the Dodgers are definitely missing the powerful bat of Muncy vibrating through this offense.
Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts told reporters last week that Muncy is on what he calls a “slow program” for his recovery and also said that he hopes Muncy will return to baseball activity “soon.” The added vagueness in Roberts’ answer has raised eyebrows about whether or not Muncy will miss even more than the extended time some fans have predicted.
We’ll definitely keep you posted, but don’t expect any bombs off the bat of number 13 anytime soon.
