RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA — Dodgers closer Evan Phillips looked very, very good in his rehab start with the RC Quakes on Sunday. Following up Dodgers teammate Bobby Miller, who gave up three runs in three innings in his first rehab, Phillips looked sharp in his one inning of work.
Facing the Modesto Nuts, Phillips twirled a 1-2-3 fourth inning while striking out two batters in the process. It took the righthander all of eleven pitches to retire the side. Easy Peasy.
“It was good for me to get back into a game environment,” Phillips said after the outing. “It was good to get my pitches in and work on the little things that will help me get back to the team as soon as possible.”
Phillips hasn’t faced a live game situation since he went down with that weird right hamstring strain that he suffered while warming up in the outfield in early May.
“Very benign,” manager Dave Roberts reported at the time. “So putting him on the IL, just feel that it shouldn’t be long and the hope is that once his stint is up, he’ll be back and ready to go.”
Prior to the injury, Phillips was money for the Dodgers in his 13.2 IP: 0.66 ERA/8 SV/17 K. He was put on the 15-day IL on May 5, so already Roberts’ prediction hasn’t quite materialized. However, with the stuff he showed on Sunday, it seems like it won’t be long before he’s back on the roster.
