LOS ANGELES, CA — Dodgers manager Dave Roberts provided an update on starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto‘s rehabilitation progress, expressing cautious optimism about his return this season. Yamamoto, currently recovering from an injury, recently completed a bullpen session and is scheduled to throw another soon.
Roberts highlighted that Yamamoto will travel with the team to Milwaukee, where he will throw a live batting practice session. “He threw a pen today, he’ll throw another pen, and then he’ll throw a live session in Milwaukee at some point,” Roberts said. “That’ll be a big step where he’s facing some hitters, and then, hopefully, if that goes well, we can just keep building up from there.”
Thus far in 2024, Yamamoto has made 14 starts for the Dodgers, posting a 6-2 record with a 2.92 ERA and 84 strikeouts over 74.0 innings of work. He hasn’t pitched since June 15th, when he came out of a game against the Royals after just two innings of work. At the time, he went on the 15-day IL with what the team called “tricep tightness,” but the injury turned out to be much more serious than just a short stint on the IL, as he has missed nearly two months of the season.
When asked about the next steps in Yamamoto’s rehab process, Roberts noted that the plan remains flexible. “It’s open-ended right now,” he explained. “I think for me, just getting the live [session] on the calendar is something that I’m personally excited about.”
The Dodgers’ manager remains hopeful but cautious, emphasizing that Yamamoto’s progress will be monitored closely to ensure a safe and effective return to the mound. The upcoming live session in Milwaukee will be a critical milestone in determining the pitcher’s readiness to rejoin the team.
