Dodgers News: Shohei Ohtani Reflects on 50th Homer, No-Hit Start, and Even Playing Outfield if Needed

LOS ANGELES, CA—Shohei Ohtani turned in another special night on Tuesday at Dodger Stadium, pitching five no-hit innings against the Phillies and also blasting his 50th home run of the season. After the game, he spoke with Japanese media about his performance, his approach at the plate, and even the possibility of taking on a new role if the team needs it in October.
Asked about reaching 50 home runs, Ohtani downplayed the milestone. “Honestly, I don’t really feel anything about it,” he said. “My focus is simply on having as many good at-bats as possible. Of course, standings and team situations are important, but for me, I just want to control what I can control and give my best effort each day.”
He added that while 50 is a big number, it only matters in how it helps the Dodgers win. “If I’m hitting home runs, it usually means we have a better chance of winning. Walks are also just as important as home runs, so I consider both to be part of my job depending on the situation.”
One of the more interesting moments came when Ohtani was asked about the Dodgers’ bullpen struggles and if he’d be open to shifting roles. “I’ve had a lot of conversations with people about different possibilities, and of course that has come up,” he said. “As I’ve said before, as a player I want to always be ready to contribute anywhere I’m asked. That could mean pitching, or possibly even playing the outfield. If I were to move to the outfield, I’d also need to be prepared defensively. Whatever the situation is, I want to be ready to handle it.”
On his hitting condition, Ohtani admitted he hasn’t felt like he’s had a stretch of perfect timing this season, but he’s found ways to make it work. “Even when my timing hasn’t been perfect, I’ve managed to grind through at-bats,” he said. “Earlier in the year when I wasn’t fully synced, that led to some slower results. But now with the season winding down, if I can lock in my swing and be at my best heading into the postseason, that would be ideal.”
For Ohtani, it’s not about chasing milestones or sticking to one role. It’s about doing whatever the Dodgers need most — whether that’s at the plate, on the mound, or, if it comes to it, even in the outfield.
