Dodgers News: The Dodgers are the First Defending World Series Champions to Return to the Fall Classic the Next Year since 2009
The Dodgers are the first champion team to make it back to the dance to defend their title since the 2009 Phillies

LOS ANGELES, CA—The Los Angeles Dodgers are heading back to the World Series after sweeping the Milwaukee Brewers in four games in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series.
With the win, the Dodgers are the first defending champion to return to the Fall Classic since the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies, who won the dance in the 2008 season.
Ultimately, the Phillies would fail to defend their title, losing to the New York Yankees in six games.
That was the last time a defending champion had a legit shot to defend their World Series title, with every other World Series champion since then losing in the postseason or missing it entirely the following year.
With the Dodgers back in the World Series, it’s also the first time a team has appeared in back-to-back World Series since the 2021-22 Houston Astros and the 2017-18 Dodgers to accomplish that feat over the last ten years.
Overall, it’s the Dodgers’ fifth World Series appearance over the last nine seasons, and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also becomes the first manager in the modern era to win the National League Pennant five times in their first ten years of managing.
