Dodgers News: Tokyo Series was the Most-Watched MLB Game in Japan’s History

Per multiple resources. The Tokyo Series featuring the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs, generated the most views in Japan’s history.

Game one on Fox delivered the best-ever performance for an opening day game played in Asia. With super-stars like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shota Imanaga, and Seiya Suzuki game one viewership averaged 838,000 putting the series up 139% over last year’s (350,000 viewers) Seoul Series between the Dodgers and Padres. Game one of the Tokyo Series peaked at 1.035 million viewers and across all platforms, viewership averaged 25 million.

Game two delivered 361,000 viewers and average audience viewership between games 1 and 2 were 590,000, up 59% over last years Seoul Series.

Fanatics sports apparel and collectibles announced that the series generated $40 million in sales, making it the best selling event in company history. According to the company, over 200,000 fans shopped at the official MLB stores operated by Fanatics in Tokyo during the week. The company said, “there was a line of over 2,000 fans waiting to enter the official store at Tokyo Dome prior to the first game of the MLB season on March 18, and that the location had 140 registers in operation to keep up with the demand”.

The Murakami collection, which Fanatics and Complex collaborated to release earlier this month, including limited-edition apparel and collectibles featuring the art of Takashi Murakami, sold out in less than one hour.

The Tokyo Series generated massive interest in Japan and around the world, as fans watched the defending World Series Champions Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Chicago Cubs in two games.
