Dodgers News: Tommy Edman Expected to Get More Starts in CF

With Edman's ankle now healed, expect to see him in CF more often, per Dave Roberts

LOS ANGELES, CA— A favorite hobby of mine is watching the Los Angeles Dodgers’ social media comment section when the admin posts the lineup. Why? Well, its fans are usually in disarray, clamoring why Hyeseong Kim is not in the starting lineup.

The outcry is fair given that Kim, 29, has hit an elite .383/.425/.543 and a 173 wRC+ in eighty-seven plate appearances this season. Well, you’ll soon get what you wished for, Dodgers fans, as it appears Tommy Edman will get more starts in center field moving forward, which in turn will create more opportunity for Kim.

Entering the season, Edman was pegged by many to be the team’s primary starting center fielder despite his being an elite second baseman; however, at the time, Edman was still seen as a more solid option than Pages, who struggled in center last season.

However, an early-season ankle injury suffered during the April series against the Atlanta Braves derailed that plan. Edman would reaggravate his ankle injury from last season, forcing him to miss time on the 10-day injured list.

Even after his return in May, his role was changed with the Dodges opting now to put him in the outfield, hoping the limited steps at second base would allow for an easier transition until he was fully healthy.

In that time, Andy Pages has stepped up significantly, becoming one of the better defensive outfielders in the National League, but that left Hyeseong Kim with little to no opportunity to start.

However, after the weekend series win in Kansas City, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed Edman would start to see more time in center field again.

Going forward, we’ll have some opportunities to get Hyeseong some more opportunities to play some second base; Tommy is going to start playing some more outfield going forward

The move should allow for more playing time for Kim, who is a natural second baseman. Add in the fact with the injury to Miguel Rojas who will be considered day-to-day after a jammed thumb and we may have our first full week of Hyeseong Kim action.

Once Edman returns to center the outfield alignment will likely be:

However, the team will still give Michael Conforto ample opportunity, but the veteran outfielder has had a rough 2025 season with Los Angeles, hitting just .173 with a 76 wRC+ this season.
