Dodgers News: Tommy Edman Undergoing Right Ankle Surgery

After playing through a lingering right ankle injury for the past two seasons, utilityman Tommy Edman is finally undergoing surgery, according to GM Brandon Gomes.

LAS VEGAS, NV—One of the many reasons the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired utilityman Tommy Edman during the 2024 trade deadline was his versatility on the baseball diamond, allowing him to play a multitude of positions, including the outfield.

However, this season, that was not the case as Edman dealt with a lingering right ankle injury that ultimately kept him primarily in the infield until the final two games of the World Series.

Well, that ankle injury has apparently reached its breaking point for Edman and the organization, as Dodgers General Manager Brandon Gomes announced that Edman would undergo right ankle surgery next week.

The possibility of offseason ankle surgery was something that was on the table, according to Edman, during a pregame interview during the World Series, when many members of the media questioned whether he was fit to play center field in the wake of Andy Pages’ struggles at the plate.

Edman was first placed on the injured list in early May because of inflammation in his right ankle. His return was delayed slightly because he struggled to run without discomfort.

After Edman injured his ankle while running the bases against the Boston Red Sox, he was a late scratch from the Dodgers’ lineup on July 28 and missed a crucial pinch-hit opportunity in that game. Although there was a chance he might go on the IL the following day, it was Hyeseong Kim who ended up doing so.

Edman avoided the injured list initially in early June after injuring his right ankle during a game against the New York Mets. However, a sprained right ankle in early August led to another stint on the IL. The Dodgers, prioritizing a thorough recovery, did not rush to activate him, and Edman returned five weeks later.

Despite being activated for the final week of the season, Edman would complain of right ankle soreness again during the Dodgers’ final road trip in September, prompting the Dodgers to limit his playing time and make him the team’s full-time second baseman for October.

Edman is expected to be ready by spring training, but Brandon Gomes did not want to put a firm timetable on the injury just yet.
