Dodgers News: Updates on Smith, Muncy & Edman
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts gave updates on several key positional players ahead of tonight’s game in Seattle.

SEATTLE, WA—The Los Angeles Dodgers are on the eve of the start of the 2025 postseason and the beginning of their quest to become the first repeat World Series champions since the New York Yankees over twenty-five years ago. Still, there are some bumps in the positional depth entering the final weekend.
Max Muncy Dealing with Lower-Body Injury
Out of the lineup again for the Dodgers tonight is third baseman Max Muncy, who Roberts confirmed is dealing with a lower-body injury. Still, it’s not something that they see as an issue before this upcoming Tuesday’s Wild Card game.
Muncy clarified the reports with the media shortly after stating that he’s been dealing with some leg bruising after being hit in the leg last week.
Muncy does not foresee it being an issue next week or impacting his availability for the Wild Card round.
Edman Dealing with Ankle Soreness after Series in Arizona
Also left out of the Dodgers Game One lineup in Seattle was utilityman Tommy Edman, who was also out of yesterday’s National League West clinching game in Arizona.
Edman, who provided the go-ahead RBI single in the 11th inning on Wednesday, was pinch-run for in that inning by outfielder Alex Call, who also replaced Edman defensively in the outfield.
Dave Roberts stated that Edman is dealing with some soreness in his ankle after playing the first two nights on the artificial turf in Chase Field.
Edman is expected to be back in the lineup tomorrow, but it’s a situation to watch with the start of the postseason less than a week away.
Will Smith Unlikely to Return for Wild Card Round
Lastly, Roberts provided some unfortunate updates on Dodgers All-Star catcher Will Smith, who remains on the 15-day injured list, recovering from a right microfracture in his throwing hand.
Despite the organization holding out hope that the right-handed slugger could return for Tuesday’s Wild Card Series, Roberts stated that he is more “hoping” than “hopeful” that Will Smith will be available.
If Smith is unable to play, Roberts reiterated that Ben Rortvedt would be the team’s primary option for that round, which makes sense given his hot start since joining the team and his effective management of the pitching staff.
The Dodgers could carry three catchers on the roster, an idea that Roberts alluded to a few weeks back, but the downside to that is if Smith is removed from the roster due to injury, he’d be ineligible to be added for the following round (NLDS).
Despite the injury, Smith has done what he can to remain active, such as working out, running, and participating in bullpen sessions, but has not yet begun to throw or swing a bat.
