Dodgers News: Will Smith Staying Active Despite Hand Injury
Will Smith provided an update on his injured right hand...

PHOENIX, AZ—The most recent updates for Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star catcher Will Smith don’t seem too promising as the right-handed slugger nurses a fractured right hand.
After receiving a second opinion, which included an additional MRI scan, it revealed a microfracture in the top of his right throwing hand, leading to the catcher now wearing a splint as he recovers.
The timeline for Smith is still to be determined, but Dodgers manager always confirmed that Smith’s regular season is likely over with his postseason status “up in the air.”
Prior to yesterday’s game, Will Smith spoke with the media, providing a further update on his hand and his plans moving forward.
“Just pain tolerance kind of thing. Obviously, with baseball activities, it’s going to be rushed, it’s going to be tight. As soon as I’m ready to go I’ll be in there,” Smith said.
Despite the injury, Smith is trying to do as many baseball activities as he can, including running and catching bullpen sessions, but has yet to resume throwing or swinging a bat.
“Running, working out, catching bullpens, standing in on bullpens to keep your eyes going. A lot of rotational stuff to be ready to start swings,” Smith said. “Keep my shoulder in shape. Everything I can do to stay as ready as possible so when I can go I’ll be right back.”
The injury is likely to be something that will plague Smith for the rest of the year, and according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, it will likely affect his swinging and throwing until he is fully healed.
The Dodgers are still unsure what they’ll do regarding Smith’s status for the Wild Card round. While the team could add three catchers to their roster, if Smith’s hand flares up and he’s removed, he’d miss the following round if the team advances.
