Dodgers News: Yates to IL, Stewart, Call, and Gervase Added to Active Roster

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced a series of roster moves on Friday, highlighted by the additions of pitchers Paul Gervase and Brock Stewart, as well as outfielder Alex Call, to the active roster. In a corresponding move, veteran reliever Kirby Yates has been placed on the injured list with lower back pain, retroactive to July 29.
Yates, signed to a one-year, $13 million deal this past offseason, has struggled to replicate his dominant 2024 campaign, in which he posted a 1.17 ERA. This year, across 31 innings, the right-hander owns a 4.31 ERA and now heads to the IL in what has been a disappointing season for the Dodgers’ high-priced bullpen addition.
One of the more notable additions is right-hander Brock Stewart, who returns to the Dodgers after stints with the Blue Jays and Twins. Stewart, initially drafted by Los Angeles, pitched for the club from 2016 to 2019. Now 33, he’s enjoying a career-best season with a 2.38 ERA over 34 innings. Expect the Dodgers to use Stewart in high-leverage situations.
The Dodgers also acquired outfielder Alex Call from the Nationals. Known more for his glove than his power, Call is having a quietly productive season at the plate, slashing .274/.371 with a 119 OPS+. Though he’s only hit three home runs, his ability to get on base and provide solid defense makes him a likely platoon partner in left field, potentially sharing time with Michael Conforto. Call also immediately becomes one of the better defensive outfielders on the roster.
Lastly, right-hander Paul Gervase, part of the trade that sent catcher Hunter Feduccia to Tampa Bay, joins the big-league squad. The towering 6-foot-7 reliever has limited MLB experience, just six innings, but features a lively fastball that reaches 97 mph, complemented by a cutter and slider. In Triple-A with the Durham Bulls, Gervase posted a 3.12 ERA across 40 innings, showing flashes of potential that could earn him meaningful innings down the stretch.
