Dodgers Notes: Glasnow’s Return, Outman’s Third Chance, Kiké to IL, Pitching Plan for SF

MILWAUKEE, WI— The Los Angeles Dodgers kicked off their final road trip of the first half, beginning with a short three-game stint in Milwaukee against the Brewers.
However, the Dodgers on this road trip will have some reinforcements with the return of Tyler Glasnow and the promotion of outfielder James Outman.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also gave us an update on what to expect over the final six days of the first half of the regular season, including updates on Tommy Edman, Teoscar Hernández, and more.
Tyler Glasnow Set to Return from IL on Wednesday
The Dodgers’ starting rotation is set to get another boost just before the All-Star break with the return of right-handed pitcher Tyler Glasnow.
Glasnow, 31, has been out since April 28th with right shoulder discomfort and just completed a minor league rehab stint with the Triple-A OKC Comets.
On Thursday, July 3rd, Glasnow put together his best start on his rehab, giving the Comets 4.1 innings, collecting eight strikeouts, and just allowing three runs on a hanging slider for a three-run home run.
During the three starts, Glasnow showcased his fiery velocity but struggled with command; however, the important thing was that he came out of the outing healthy.
The return will push Dustin May back in the rotation, who was initially slated to pitch the series finale in Milwaukee; he’ll now kick off the three-game weekend series in San Francisco.
Outman Ready for Third Stint in LA
Joining the Dodgers on their six-game road trip and possibly after the All-Star break is outfielder James Outman, who we recalled from Triple-A OKC in place of the injured Kiké Hernández.
For Outman, it’ll be his third stint with the big league club after being optioned once Teoscar Hernández and Tommy Edman were activated off the 15-day injured list in May.
In his brief appearance this season, Outman has struggled hitting .125 and posting a strikeout percentage north of fifty percent.
However, now, with Hernández’s injury, Tommy Edman dealing with a fractured pinkie toe, and Teoscar Hernández having a foot issue, Outman is set to get ample opportunity to prove he belongs.
While the results have not translated, Outman is having a very productive year for the Comets, hitting .289/.378/.592 with a .970 OPS and has reached the twenty-home-run mark before the All-Star break.
If Outman can bring anything close to that production or something similar to his ‘23 rookie campaign, it would change the entire complexion of the outfield, as he’s arguably the best defensive center fielder on the roster.
Outman got his first start in yesterday’s 9-1 loss to the Brewers, going 1-for-4 with a double and one strikeout.
Kiké Hernández is the Latest Player to Hit the IL
As already mentioned, utilityman Kiké Hernández is the latest player to hit the injured list for Los Angeles this season.
Hernández, 33, has been dealing with left elbow inflammation since the Dodgers’ road series in Cleveland last month but just recently informed the training staff of the injury.
Per Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, the injury has affected Hernández’s swing, which could explain his .083 batting average over his last ten games played.
“Left elbow, inside, outside of it, so doesn’t affect the defense, but the swing has been compromised,” Roberts said. “Yesterday, it really came to a head, as far as swinging, and so we stayed away from him again today.”
Roberts also stated that Hernández received a cortisone injection and should be on track to return just after the All-Star break.
The injury does have a significant impact on the Dodgers 26-man roster, as Hernández was one of three players expected to fill in at third base in the wake of Max Muncy’s injury.
Now, with Hernández out, the burden will fall squarely on Miguel Rojas and Tommy Edman.
Hernández was hitting .195/.259/.367 this season with a 74 wRC+ in seventy-two games this season.
Pitching Plan for the Weekend
The return of Tyler Glasnow on Wednesday from the 60-day injured list has shifted things in the Dodgers rotation for their upcoming weekend series in San Francisco.
Dustin May, 27, was initially set to toe the rubber in Milwaukee for Wednesday’s series finale; however, now he’ll get pushed back a day and lead off the series against the Giants on Friday.
For Saturday’s game, Dave Roberts confirmed that right-hander Emmet Sheehan will remain in the starting rotation and make his third start of the season in the Bay.
For the first-half finale game, the Dodgers are set to go with 2025 National League All-Star Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Yamamoto will be coming off the shortest start of his Major League career, where the righty allowed five runs (three earned) while just getting two outs in the first inning.
After that, the Dodgers will head into the All-Star break and resume play on July 18th at home against the Brewers for a three-game series.
