After months of an exciting offseason for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the 2024 regular season is about to begin.
With Cactus League Action all but wrapped up after the Dodgers’ 31-man roster left for South Korea and the Spring Breakout game concluded, the Dodgers have their eyes set on the games that actually count.
However, over the weekend, there was plenty of news around the team, which we will discuss in the latest Dodgers Notes.
Dodgers 31-man roster announced for Korea Series.
Over the weekend, after the Dodgers made their trip across the Pacific Ocean to South Korea, the team announced their 31-man roster.
While the roster is larger than the traditional roster size during the regular season, only 26 players are deemed eligible to play.
Catchers (3): Will Smith, Austin Barnes, Hunter Feduccia*
Infielders (5): Freddie Freeman, Gavin Lux, Mookie Betts, Max Muncy, Miguel Rojas
Outfielders (3): Teoscar Hernández, James Outman, Jason Heyward
Utility players (3): Chris Taylor, Kiké Hernández, Miguel Vargas
Designated hitter (1): Shohei Ohtani
Starting pitchers (4): Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Bobby Miller, Landon Knack*
Right-handed relievers (10): Evan Phillips, Joe Kelly, Ryan Brasier, Blake Treinen, Daniel Hudson, Gavin Stone, Michael Grove, J.P. Feyereisen, Kyle Hurt, Gus Varland
Left-handed relievers (2): Ryan Yarbrough, Alex Vesia
Left-handed starting pitcher James Paxton is missing from the roster. He will remain in Arizona preparing for the domestic home opener against the Cardinals.
Daniel Hudson added to the 40-man roster.
Also on the Dodgers’ official 31-man roster is right-handed reliever Daniel Hudson, who the Dodgers re-signed to a minor league deal.
Due to the deal being a minor league one with an invitation to Spring Training, Hudson was never offically on the 40-man roster, so a corresponding move had to be made.
To make room on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster, Andre Lipcius was DFA’d just after being acquired by the Dodgers for cash.
Hudson looks to bounce back after two lost seasons with various injuries; however, when healthy, the 37-year-old veteran can be a crucial piece in a dominant Dodgers bullpen.
Dodgers prospects dominate in Spring Breakout
New to MLB Spring Training was the prospect showcase game labeled as Spring Breakout. The game would feature each team’s top prospects without featuring major leaguers.
The Dodgers, who continue to have one of the deepest farm systems in baseball, have plenty of talent to show in the game with young players such as Jarred Karros, Jackson Ferris, Justin Wrobleski, Thayron Liranzo, Dalton Rushing, Josue De Paula, Kendall George, Zyhir Hope, and others.
However, Kendall George, the 36th overall pick in the 2023 MLB first-year player draft, impressed during the breakout game. George, who banged two hits, one of which was a bases-clearing triple, has always showcased speed. If the Dodgers can add some pop to his bat, look out for George to be the dynamic outfielder the Dodgers have craved.
Miguel Vargas optioned
While the Dodgers were on their trip to Korea, the team announced they had optioned 2B/LF Miguel Vargas.
Vargas, the Dodgers’ Opening Day second basemen in 2023, has had some rough luck after batting .195/.305/.367 and getting sent to the minor leagues shortly after.
Vargas will still be with the team during their Korea Series trip as an inactive player, similar to a taxi squad player.
