The 2025 Major League Baseball season is fast approaching, with pitchers and catchers officially reporting to camp on Tuesday, February 11th. The first full-squad workout is slated for Saturday, February 15th.
With the start of the new season, the 60-day Injured List, which closes five days after the conclusion of the World Series, is also reopening. With it closed, the Dodgers activated all their players during the winter, including guys who are expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2025 season.
Currently, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 40-man roster is also full, which will hinder them from making any further free-agent moves, such as a reunion with fan-favorite utilityman Kiké Hernández and veteran lefty Clayton Kershaw.
Once the 60-day Injured List opens, the Dodgers will have plenty of candidates to transfer over when camp starts and before Opening Day in Tokyo, Japan, in March, but what names are they?
Gavin Stone
The Los Angeles Dodgers starting rotation got quite the bump from rookie right-handed pitcher Gavin Stone last season. Stone, 26, put together an excellent season in his second stint in the Major Leagues, pitching to a 3.53 ERA, 4.01 FIP, and ERA+ of 109 in 140.1 innings pitched.
After the second half, Stone showed signs of fatigue, only making it out of the fifth inning less than a handful of times. However, it all came crashing down in the final month of the regular season after Stone was placed on the 10-day Injured List with shoulder inflammation.
Despite Stone and the Dodgers holding out for the young righty to pitch in October in some capacity, those dreams were dead after Stone underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on October 9th, ending any thought of Stone pitching in October.
Due to the surgery being done so late in the season, Stone not only missed all of the Dodgers’ 2024 postseason run but will also likely miss all of the upcoming 2025 season, making him a prime 60-day Injured List candidate.
Brusdar Graterol
Another Dodgers right-handed pitcher who will miss a significant chunk of the upcoming season due to offseason shoulder surgery is relief pitcher Brusdar Graterol.
Graterol, 26, missed most of the 2024 regular season due to a shoulder injury suffered in spring training and a hamstring injury sustained late in the season. However, Graterol was able to return for the Dodgers postseason run, including some key appearances during the Fall Classic.
Overall, Graterol has been one of the Dodgers’ most talented arms in the bullpen, pitching to a 2.69 ERA over his last 171 appearances from 2020-2023. Despite the surgery, Graterol is expected to return sometime in the second half of the regular season.
However, since Graterol’s return is so far out, the Dodgers can transfer him to the 60-day Injured List to free up space on the 40-man roster until he is ready to return.
River Ryan
As I’ve stated numerous times over the last year, the Los Angeles Dodgers are at the epicenter of the recent pitching injury epidemic, and these following three arms are some of the injuries that will impact the team moving forward.
First up is rookie right-handed pitcher River Ryan, who will miss the entire 2025 season as he recovers from Tommy John Surgery after suffering a UCL sprain last August.
Ryan, 26, had a 1.33 ERA in four starts for the Dodgers last summer, making his Major League Debut just three seasons after being acquired from the San Diego Padres in the Matt Beaty trade. Like Stone, with Ryan having the surgery so late into the season, the chances of him making any impact next season are slim as it is a lengthy fourteen-month recovery process.
Kyle Hurt
Kyle Hurt is another Dodgers arm who suffered a UCL injury last season that required Tommy John Surgery, ending his 2024 season.
Hurt, 26, made the Dodgers Opening Day roster and posted an elite 1.35 ERA in 6.2 innings pitched before being placed on the 15-day Injured List in April due to shoulder inflammation. That would be the last the Dodgers saw of hurt as the righty would undergo season-ending surgery on July 30th.
Hurt is expected to begin throwing this upcoming summer, but as with Ryan, the process can take several months to fully recover.
Emmet Sheehan
Lastly is right-handed pitcher Emmet Sheehan who missed all of 2024 recovering from Tommy John Surgery in May.
Sheehan, 25, had a 4-1 record with a 4.92 ERA for the Dodgers during the 2023 season, splitting time between the bullpen and starting rotation. However, in his minor league career, the righty had an elite 2.95 ERA in 146.2 innings.
Sheehan was all but a lock to pick up the fifth spot in the Dodgers starting rotation last spring, but after just a few days at camp, Sheehan was shut down from throwing due to shoulder soreness.
That shoulder injury would transform into a UCL injury as the Dodgers announced that Sheehan underwent successful Tommy John Surgery in May, ending his 2024 season before it even started.
Sheehan announced at DodgerFest that he had begun throwing off the mound and that he aimed to pitch in rehab games in May or June. That said, it is all but certain the Dodgers will transfer him to the 60-day Injured List.
