Dodgers Opinion: Does a Rich Hill reunion make sense?

With the start of the second half upon us, the Los Angeles Dodgers need some serious pitching depth. While President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman and General Manager Brandon Gomes should be looking for a frontline ace such as Garrett Crochet, Tarik Skubal, or Nathan Eovaldi, they could also benefit from getting an innings eater to help the workload of the starting rotation so everyone is fresh come October.

One name that is on the radar is former Dodgers left-handed pitcher Rich Hill, who is still an unsigned free agent by design. This family-driven man wanted to take half a season off and rejoin a team after the start of the second half.

During the offseason, Hill expressed interest in pitching again in 2024. The lefty explained to MLB.com’s Justice de los Santos that he has “all intentions of playing” in what would be his 20th Major League season.

However, Hill had a change of heart despite his previous comments stating he’d like to spend time with his wife and kids before joining any club for a hopeful pennant race.

But I would love to watch my son play Little League, and I can’t get that back. He’s gonna be 12, so it’s his last year. I’ve been fortunate enough to play this game for a long time and have a kind of position to be in that I’ve worked for and worked hard to be in and feel fortunate to be able to see that come to fruition, even through injuries and everything.

Rich Hill’s comments back in October about playing in 2024

Despite a solid few starts at the end of the season for the San Diego Padres, the then-43-year-old had one of his worst seasons, pitching to a lackluster 5.41 ERA through 146 1/3 innings. However, in his time with the Dodgers from mid-2016 to 2019, the lefty had a 3.16 ERA over sixty-nine starts.

With the Dodgers rotation facing significant health challenges, including starters Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Walker Buhler on the injured list and Bobby Miller struggling in his sophomore season, the team urgently needs a reliable pitcher who can consistently deliver strong performances throughout the regular season.

Los Angeles Dodgers insider and DodgerTalk host David Vassegh had Rich Hill on, who shared his interest in playing again and would love to join the Dodgers and compete for a championship.

Would you be okay with a reunion with Rich Hill as long as the Dodgers made more moves before the trade deadline? Let us know!
