LOS ANGELES, CA — After the Dodgers secured a spot in the 2024 World Series by defeating their NLCS opponents the New York Mets in six games, manager Dave Roberts addressed the media in a postgame interview. Reflecting on the journey to the championship series, Roberts acknowledged the resilience and tenacity shown by his team, especially after being down 2-1 in the NLDS. “I think they proved to themselves how tough they are,” he said. “When you get in a position that we were in… it just turns into a street fight. It’s, you know, lose and go home, or you just fight like heck. And I think that’s what got us over the top.”
A key storyline of the NLCS was Tommy Edman‘s remarkable rise from not having played a game for the Dodgers until August to winning the NLCS MVP. Roberts credited the front office for the acquisition and expressed admiration for Edman’s impact. “It’s a crazy trajectory,” Roberts stated. “I can’t say enough about the front office being able to acquire him at the deadline. You know, what he can do for us on the field, in the clubhouse, it’s just amazing.” He added, “I never imagined… he’d be hitting fourth in a postseason game, but I trust him, the guys trust him. He’s made huge defensive plays for us and had huge hits.”
When asked about handling criticism and decision-making pressure, particularly during bullpen games and pitching changes, Roberts emphasized staying focused on what he believes in. “Number one, I don’t do social media, so that’s the start for me,” he explained. “I’ve got to make decisions, bet on players that I feel… are capable or put them in the best position to have success and be willing to live with whatever consequence.” He expressed confidence in his choices throughout the postseason, noting, “The players have made me look really good.”
Roberts also praised Chris Taylor, who had been dealing with health and consistency issues during the season but stepped up with crucial performances in the NLCS. “I can’t say enough about Chris,” Roberts said. “He’s obviously had a tough season… but sometimes it just comes down to betting on a person. The moment’s never going to be too big for him.” Taylor contributed with key hits, defensive plays, and even a sacrifice bunt in Game 6, proving his value when it mattered most.
Looking ahead to the World Series against the Yankees, Roberts kept the message simple: “Four more wins, that’s it,” he said. “Obviously, we’re going to celebrate tonight as we should… but for us, it’s kind of one game at a time, appreciating the fact that we still got four wins to take care of business.”
Roberts also spoke about Max Muncy’s performance, particularly his ability to fill in at first base for the injured Freddie Freeman. “Max has been… a postseason player,” he commented. “He’s an on-base machine, he controls the strike zone. For him to pivot from third base to first base, which he hadn’t played in a few years, also speaks to his ability and his talent.”
Reflecting on the win, Roberts concluded by recognizing the Mets’ efforts and the work of their manager, Carlos Mendoza. “They’ve had a tremendous season, and they fought hard,” he said. “Carlos does a great job with that club.” As the Dodgers gear up for their World Series showdown, the team’s resilience and determination will continue to drive them forward.
The World Series begins on Friday evening at 5:08 PDT from Chavez Ravine. Be there, Dodger fans!
