LOS ANGELES, CA — Ahead of Game 2 of the National League Division Series (NLDS) against the Padres, Dodgers utility player Tommy Edman spoke candidly about his experience joining the team at the trade deadline and his critical role in Game 1. Edman’s bunt single sparked a rally that led to the game-winning run, showing his value to the team.

When asked about his threshold for switching to the right side of the plate against a right-handed pitcher, Edman explained that it’s a decision based on matchups and pitch profiles. “It’s kind of just the matchups, based on a guy’s pitch profile. I look at which pitches are easier to get to from the right side versus the left side. Usually, that’s reflected in the splits,” he said. Edman shared that the pitcher he faced the night before had pretty even splits, which factored into his decision to bat right-handed.

Having joined the Dodgers midseason, Edman was eager to be a part of postseason moments. Reflecting on his arrival and Game 1, he expressed his excitement about the team and the environment at Dodger Stadium. “We had a lot of great games in the regular season that got me fired up for what the postseason would be like, and the first game didn’t disappoint,” Edman said, highlighting Shohei Ohtani‘s key home run that shifted the momentum in their favor. “It was a great environment in the crowd, just a lot of fun to play that first postseason game. Hopefully, we can have a lot more fun games like that.”

A question about comparing Dodger fans to those of his former team, the St. Louis Cardinals, brought out Edman’s appreciation for both fan bases. “Both fan bases are really great. I think at Dodger Stadium, it’s a touch louder. There are more fans, and it’s a bit more upbeat,” he said, adding that he’s enjoyed getting to know Dodgers fans in his few months with the team.

One of the standout moments in the interview came when Edman was asked about the Dodgers front office coveting his skill set. “It gives me confidence to know that my skill set’s valued. Seeing from the outside how many talented players the Dodgers acquire who have a lot of success here, I was excited to join the organization and see how I could improve my game,” he shared. Edman emphasized that he hopes to contribute in various ways to help the team.

Edman also spoke about facing Shohei Ohtani during the World Baseball Classic (WBC) and now being teammates. “I’m glad to be on his team now and not have to play against him. What’s impressive is that he’s the best player in baseball, yet he doesn’t put pressure on himself. He’s very laid back and always has a great attitude.”

As Edman wrapped up the interview, he acknowledged the personal aspect of the series, having grown up in San Diego. “I’ve got a lot of friends who are still Padres fans, so I’m really hoping we can beat them so I can talk trash this offseason,” he said with a smile.

Edman’s versatility and team-oriented mindset have made him a key asset for the Dodgers, and his contributions will be crucial as the series continues.
