Dodgers Preview: Los Angeles finishes off seven-game road trip with three-game series in Miami

The Los Angeles Dodgers continue their seven-game road trip on the East Coast, this time heading down south to Miami, Florida, to begin a three-game series with the Marlins.

The Dodgers, fresh off a four-game series split with the Atlanta Braves, look to get back on track. They have yet to win a series since taking three of four games in Arizona against their National League West rival Dimainbacks on September 2nd.

Over the course of two weeks, the Dodgers have split a series with the Los Angeles Angels, lost a series to the Chicago Cubs, and split another four-game series with the Atlanta Braves this past weekend.

Despite all that, the Dodgers have maintained a modest division lead over the San Diego Padres, who enter today’s game three-and-a-half back from the Dodgers.

Over their last ten games, the Dodgers are squarely at .500, winning five games. With a win today, the Dodgers would be one of the first teams to clinch a spot in the 2024 Major League Baseball postseason. The magic number to win the National League West is nine games, and with the Marlins being way under .500 and out of postseason contention, the Dodgers would hope to take advantage of this series to pad that lead.

It has not been the greatest season for Miami Marlins baseball. Just a season ago, the Marlins were a wild card postseason team and fell to the Phildepkgia Phillies in two games.

The Marlins, under sophomore manager Skip Schumaker, sit alone in last place in the National League East with a 55-95 record. They are thirty-five games back from the leading Phillies and twenty-seven games back from the final National League wild card.

Over their last ten games, the Marlins have only collected three wins, and in their first meeting with the Dodgers this season, the Fish were swept out of Chavez Ravine in three games back in May.

Who’s in & who’s out?

The Los Angeles Dodgers will continue to be without right-hander Tyler Glasnow, who has left the team for an unknown location. He spoke to the media after not speaking publicly since Dodgers manager Dave Roberts hinted that his 2024 season was likely over due to a right elbow sprain.

Right-handed pitcher Gavin Stone is set to begin a throwing program in Miami this week as the Dodgers hope the rookie right-handed pitcher can return in some capacity this October.

Veteran left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw has also continued throwing as he rehabs from a bone spur in his left big toe. He is on track to rejoin the team late this regular season, hopefully, or by the first round of the Dodgers postseason.

Left-handed pitcher Anthony Banda, who fractured his hand on a self-inflicted injury after a frustrating outing last week, is in Arizona rehabbing his hand as he and the Dodgers also hope he can return by the start of the postseason.

Veteran catcher Austin Barnes will also be out this series after fracturing a different part of his left toe, and in his absence, the Dodgers have recalled rookie Hunter Feduccia.

Right-handed pitcher Joe Kelly is also expected to be activated sometime this week after being placed on the 15-day injured list with shoulder inflammation for the second time this season after going on a rehab assignment in Triple-A OKC this past week.

As for the Miami Marlins, right-handed pitcher Josh McMillon was placed on the injured list on Thursday and returned to Miami to undergo further testing after experiencing right elbow tightness. He exited early in Wednesday’s series finale vs. the Pirates after throwing two fastballs well under his season average of 95.4 mph.
