Dodgers Preview: Rockies come to town for short three-game homestand

Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Dodgers, fresh off their first series win since May 19th, are now gearing up for a thrilling three-game set with the Colorado Rockies. This will mark their first meeting with the NL West rival in 2024, adding an extra layer of excitement to the matchup.

The Dodgers, who have been on a skid over the last ten days, are riding high off a three-game sweep of the New York Mets but are still a modest 5-5 over their last ten games.

Despite the .500 stretch, the Dodgers still sit alone in first place in the National League West, 6.5 games ahead of the second-place Giants.

The Colorado Rockies enter this matchup dead last in the National League West. They also have the second-worst record (.352) and the fewest wins in the National League.

They have four wins in their last ten games; however, they could only muster three wins in thirteen meetings with Los Angeles last season. It is truly a “rebuilding” year for the Rockies and one they’d soon like to forget.

Pitching match-ups

Game Three: Gavin Stone (5-2, 3.16 ERA) vs Austin Gomber (LHP) (1-2, 2.76 ERA)

Who’s in & who’s out?

The Los Angeles Dodgers are still dealing with the injury bug in their pitching staff. The players already mentioned weekly, including Bobby Miller, Brusdar Graterol, Joe Kelly, and Ryan Brasier, are still on the IL.

However, they will be getting an elite arm back for the bullpen, as right-handed closer Evan Phillips is due to be activated before tonight’s game.

Phillips is putting together a stellar season for the Dodgers, posting a 0.66 ERA in 13.2 innings pitched and eight saves on the year.

The Rockies also have a few critical injuries for this series, such as outfielder Nolan Jones, who is dealing with two injuries, one to his lower back and a left knee injury he suffered on his rehab assignment.

Jordan Beck, the Rockies’ No. 4 prospect, is also sidelined until mid-July due to a broken hand he suffered while making a diving catch on May 25th. This gives him a timetable of four to six weeks until he is activated.

Right-handed pitcher Justin Lawrence is out until mid-June with a right shoulder strain, while Jake Bird is out with right elbow inflammation. The big arm on the IL, however, is former Rockies “ace” Kyle Freeland, who was placed on the 60-day IL due to a left elbow strain suffered in a game where he pinch-ran in extra innings.

However, some good news for the Rockies is that left-handed pitcher Austin Gomber is set to start Sunday’s final game after having a sore left elbow. Gomber has been Colarado’s best starter, posting a 0.68 ERA in May and a 2.76 ERA collectively for the 2024 season.
