Fresh off a series sweep to kick off the second half of the 2024 Major League Baseball season, the Dodgers will finish off their seven-game homestand with a four-game set with their National League West division rival, San Fransisco Giants.

The Giants are in a weird space as we enter the second half. They are more than seven games back in the National League West with the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks in front of them, but they are still in the postseason race, only three games out of the third and final National League wild-card spot.

However, the Giants failed to capitalize on the start of their second half of play, losing two of their three games against the Colorado Rockies, who are in the seller of the National League West.

Each team has struggled over the last ten games, winning only four of them despite the Dodgers finishing off the series sweep before this series.

It will be the last time these two teams meet in the regular season, and in nine games played so far, the Dodgers have won six of them.

Who’s in & who’s out?

The Los Angeles Dodgers will be getting a massive boost this series to the starting rotation this season as right-handed pitcher Tyler Glasnow and left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw are set to be activated off the injured list and make starts on Wednesday and Thursday.

Glasnow was placed on the 15-day injured list with back tightness during the three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies and only missed one start in Detroit as the team opted to give Glasnow an extended rest as the team entered the all-star break.

Glasnow pitched a three-inning simulated game at Dodgers Stadium during the Red Sox series and felt good physically. He stated that his injury was attributed to “tall man syndrome” and that he was in good spirits over the weekend.

As for Clayton Kershaw, he will be making his 2024 season debut as the veteran lefty has missed the entire season rehabbing from an offseason shoulder surgery that was expected to keep him out until mid-summer.

Kershaw began a throwing program in late May, and over the next eight weeks, the lefty has built up his arm enough to be activated and rejoin the 26-man roster for this series.

Kershaw threw three minor league rehab starts along with a simulated game and posted a 3.60 ERA in ten innings pitched while striking out twelve batters.

The Dodgers also have sent right-handed relief pitchers Brusdar Graterol and Miacheal Grove on a minor league rehab assignment, according to Dave Roberts, and would need around five to seven appearances until activated.

In the final game of the Red Sox series, the Dodgers also activated veteran left-handed outfielder Jason Heyward off the 15-day injured list after suffering a knee contusion trying to rob a Joc Pederson home run at Chavez Ravine.

In Heyward’s activation, the Dodgers opted to send down lefty James Outman, who was hitting only .200/.250/.200 in nine games since his recall at the beginning of July.

Also, during the series finale against the Red Sox, veteran shortstop Miguel Rojas was removed from the game after the third inning due to right forearm tightness, and no decision has been made if the thirty-six-year-old utility infielder will be placed on the 15-day injured list.

The San Fransisco Giants have their own injury woes similar to the starting rotation, where their only main starters most of the season have been Logan Webb and Jordan Hicks.

While Blake Snell has finally been activated off the 15-day injured list after a groin issue, the Giants are still without right-handed pitchers Keaton Winn and Alex Cobb, along with lefty Robbie Ray, who are all expected to return in late July or mid-August.

Offensively, the Giants are as healthy as they can be despite losing Jung Hoo Lee, who is out for the remainder of the season. If the Giants do decide to buy at this year’s trade deadline, they won’t be around to see the Dodgers unless the two teams meet in October.
