Game 58, 5/29/2024: Dodgers 10, Mets 3
NEW YORK, NY — It seems like the Dodgers’ bats are finally coming alive again as they crush the Mets 10-3 to secure the sweep in New York. It makes you wonder if the Dodgers’ lineup summoned the powers of Jobu out of nowhere after their recent offensive skid, but whatever the case may be, they were firing on all cylinders at all the right times throughout this series.
The scoring started off strong for the Dodgers as Will Smith hit his second home run in as many days to put LA ahead early in the second. Andy Pages and Shohei Ohtani added their insurance runs by way of RBI singles in the fourth and fifth, respectively, to lead 3-0.
The Mets finally broke their 21 consecutive scoreless inning streak in the fifth as Tomás Nido launched a two-run shot to cut the deficit to one. In the same inning, J.D. Martinez hit a ball in the left-field gap that resulted in a close play at second as Martinez tried to leg out a double. Nonetheless, Martinez was safe at second, and the tying run came in to score.
New York’s bullpen woes continued in this one. Their inability to shut down lineups in close games showed up yet again as newly entered pitcher Adam Ottavino gave up a cookie of a sweeper to Smith in the top of the eighth, and he did not miss it one bit, launching the pitch over the left-field fence. It was Smith’s second homer of the game and his first multi-homer game since August 2019. The Dodger assault continued as Miguel Rojas added an RBI single following a triple by Jason Heyward and a walk by Gavin Lux. Rojas’s ball had some life to it as off the bat it appeared to be a groundout, but it bounced high on the dirt and went over the head of the Mets’ third baseman Brett Baty.
And that was just the appetizer for the eighth. Miguel Vargas continued to produce quality at-bats as he had all game and in his turn at the plate, he battled, and then blooped an RBI double to drive in two more runs, extending the already out-of-reach lead. It wouldn’t be an outpouring of offensive production without the presence of Shohei Ohtani’s bat crushing a two-run shot to add the exclamation point to a six-spot in the inning!
Oh yeah, Jason Heyward added another exclamation point in the ninth as he joined the home run parade and hit the fourth home run for the Dodgers on the evening!
The Dodgers’ bullpen shut out the New York hitters after the fifth to secure a much-needed sweep against a struggling Mets squad. The Dodgers turn their attention back to Chavez Ravine as they return to Los Angeles to host the Rockies for a quick three-game homestand before hitting the road again. It gets underway Friday at 7:10 PM PT. Walker Buehler will take the bump for the Dodgers to start the series off. Great two days of action-packed baseball in the Big Apple, and what a clean sweep it was! Have a relaxing off day tomorrow, Dodgers fans, and enjoy your free Jumbo Jack too!
