NEW YORK, NY — At the end of the day, Max Scherzer is still Max Scherzer. The three-time Cy Young winner continued his mastery over the Dodgers on Sunday, pitching seven innings of one-hit ball. By the time the Dodgers did score, it was only enough to tie the game and send it into extra frames, in which they promptly lost by a score of 2-1.
However, we shouldn’t let this unfortunate loss and lack of offense take our eye of the real story in this weekend series with the Mets. The real story is the Dodgers’ pitchers holding the Mets offense to just three runs (one unearned) over the three game set. The starters were great (especially Julio Urias on Friday) and the bullpen was nearly perfect, its only blemish being the gifted runner scoring in the bottom of the 10th inning on a hit down the line by Luis Guillorme.
Today’s example of solid pitching was Bobby Miller. After being more than a bit shaky after a fantastic start to his career, Miller was on point all day on Sunday. He only went 4.2 innings, but it was a vastly improved version of himself on the mound. If not for a bases-loaded comebacker that he couldn’t quite handle, he would have had a scoreless five innings. Still, progress.
“For me, it was growth. It was a step in the right direction,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “He made pitches when he needed to. … For Bobby, great job tonight.”
Having won two of three at Citi Field, the Dodgers move down the coast to the city of Baltimore to take on the seriously hot Orioles. It will be a great measuring stick for this lineup and this pitching staff. Emmet Sheehan gets the ball for the Boys in Blue against youngster Grayson Rodriguez, a highly touted rookie who is still trying to find it on the big league level. Here we go!
