Game 122, 8/15/2024: Dodgers 4, Brewers 6
MILWAUKEE, WI — The Dodgers saw their hopes of securing a series win slip away in a rough eighth inning, leading to a 6-4 defeat against the Milwaukee Brewers. The game, held at American Family Field, was a tight contest until the fateful frame, where the Dodgers’ bullpen faltered under pressure.
The game started with Jack Flaherty on the mound for the Dodgers, who struggled early but managed to settle down as the game progressed. Flaherty’s outing began on a shaky note, as he gave up a leadoff double to Brice Turang followed by a two-run homer to Jackson Chourio, putting the Dodgers in a quick 2-0 hole. Moments later, William Contreras added a solo shot, extending Milwaukee’s lead to 3-0 in the first inning. Despite this rocky start, Flaherty regrouped, and over the next four innings, he kept the Brewers in check, giving the Dodgers a chance to claw their way back.
The Dodgers responded in the second inning, capitalizing on a throwing error by shortstop Willy Adames. After Gavin Lux singled, Miguel Rojas reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed Lux to advance to third. Jason Heyward grounded out, bringing Lux home to put the Dodgers on the board. Andy Pages then doubled to score Rojas, narrowing the deficit to 3-2.
In the third inning, the Dodgers continued their comeback. Freddie Freeman and Will Smith both singled, and Lux came through again with an RBI single, tying the game at 3-3. The momentum seemed to shift in the Dodgers’ favor as they took the lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Enrique Hernández, giving them a 4-3 advantage.
The eighth inning began with Daniel Hudson on the mound, tasked with preserving the lead. However, the Brewers quickly turned the tide. Jackson Chourio, who had already homered earlier in the game, led off the inning with a sharp double to center field, setting the stage for the Brewers’ comeback. Hudson then walked Garrett Mitchell, putting the tying run in scoring position.
William Contreras followed with a single that deflected off Hudson, loading the bases with no outs. The Dodgers’ defense and pitching struggled to regain control as Willy Adames delivered a crucial single to left field, driving in Chourio and tying the game at 4-4.
The Brewers weren’t finished. Tyler Black grounded out to third, but it was enough to bring Mitchell home and give Milwaukee a 5-4 lead. Rhys Hoskins then added an insurance run with another groundout, allowing Contreras to score and extend the Brewers’ lead to 6-4.
The Dodgers were unable to muster a response in the ninth inning, with Brewers closer Devin Williams shutting down the side to seal the victory. The rough eighth inning not only erased the Dodgers’ lead but also handed them a disappointing loss, highlighting the volatility of late-game pitching in critical situations.
Stuck with a split, the Dodgers move their traveling road show to the city of St. Louis, where they will face the struggling Cardinals who have all but fallen out of playoff contention. The first game of the series will mark the beginning of “Players Weekend,” which is sure to have some surprises in store as the league tries to showcase the personalities of the players. No word yet on the Friday night’s starter, but it looks to be Glasnow and Kershaw on Saturday and Sunday.
