Game 4, 3/29/2024: Dodgers 6, Cardinals 3
LOS ANGELES, CA—After a dominating Opening Day win at Chavez Ravine over the St. Louis Cardinals, the Dodgers turned young right-handed starter Bobby Miller. The Dodgers deployed their righty-heavy lineup against the Cardinals left-handed starter, Zack Thompson.
The offense got started early after Mookie Betts blasted his third home run of the season to get the scoring started. It was Betts’s 49th career leadoff HR, the fifth most in MLB history, while also passing Davey Lopes as the Dodgers’ all-time leader with leadoff homeruns.
The Dodgers’ homerun spree continued with the debut home run of newly acquired lefty slugger Teoscar Hernández. This was a significant moment for Hernández, as he demonstrated his prowess against left-handed pitching, a skill he was specifically brought in for.
The Dodgers bats were quiet until the bottom of the fourth inning, where a Will Smith walk and a Max Muncy single led to a second homerun for Hernández, the 17th multi-homerun game of his career.
The Dodgers were already cruising to a 5-0 lead entering the bottom of the 7th inning and added some insurance from another home run, this time a solo shot by Miguel Rojas, who got the start as SS today.
Bobby Miller got off to a fantastic start on the pitching side, striking out the side on fifteen pitches. He showcased an air-bending change-up and a nasty 92 MPH slider.
Miller started the game off by retiring eleven straight batters, allowing his first hit after 4.2 innings. Miller was brilliant, tossing six innings, allowing 0 runs, and setting a new career high in strikeouts with eleven while walking one on 93 pitches.
It was one of the best starts of Miller’s career and a great way to kick off his 2024 sophomore season, where the Dodgers expect big things from the righty.
The Dodgers bullpen was shaky after Michael Grove got into a bases-loaded jam in the 8th inning, which led to three runs and Ryan Brasier stopping the bleeding.
Evan Phillips closed the door on the Cardinals, earning his second save of the 2024 season, as the Dodgers won 6-3. Yoshinobu Yamamoto will take the ball tomorrow against former Dodger Lance Lynn at 6:10 PM PT.
