Dodgers Recap: Dodgers Shut Out Rays Behind Yamamoto, Freeman’s Three-Hit Game

Game 112, 8/03/2025: Dodgers 3, Rays 0

In the final game of their nine-game road trip, the Dodgers wrapped up their series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, aiming for a third straight series win after taking two of three from both the Red Sox and Reds. Yoshinobu Yamamoto took the mound for Los Angeles, while Joe Boyle started for Tampa Bay.

Yamamoto, who entered the game with the lowest road ERA in the National League at 1.78, turned in another strong outing. The right-hander tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing five hits while striking out six.

The Dodgers sustained a setback in the top of the fifth when Tommy Edman rolled his right ankle while rounding first base. The versatile infielder was forced to leave the game, adding to a recent wave of injuries for Los Angeles. It’s still unclear how long Edman will be out, but with Max Muncy currently rehabbing in the minors, the Dodgers might consider speeding up his return to the big league roster.

Yamamoto encountered some defensive miscues in the bottom half of the fifth, but he worked out of the jam by striking out Brandon Lowe to end the inning.

The Dodgers broke through in the sixth when Andy Pages ripped an RBI single to right field, scoring Freddie Freeman from second to give the Dodgers a 1–0 lead.

Following Yamamoto’s exit, left-hander Alex Vesia entered in relief and promptly recorded the final out of the sixth inning. He returned for the seventh and delivered another scoreless frame, continuing his strong stretch out of the bullpen.

The Dodgers added to their lead in the top of the seventh. Freddie Freeman came through with an RBI single to score Shohei Ohtani from third, extending the lead to 2–0.

In the ninth, Los Angeles tacked on one more insurance run courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Mookie Betts, pushing the score to 3–0.

After Vesia’s outing, newly acquired reliever and former Dodger Brock Stewart took the mound in the eighth and threw a scoreless inning. In the ninth, Blake Treinen loaded the bases after recording two outs, Ben Casparius was called from the bullpen to record the final out and earn his second save of the season.

The Dodgers came away with a 3–0 victory, powered by another strong performance from Yamamoto, who improved to 10–7 on the year. Offensively, Freeman led the way, finishing 3-for-5 with an RBI, while the bullpen combined for 3.1 scoreless innings to back up the shutout.

The focus now shifts to the status of Tommy Edman, who exited the game with a right ankle injury. The Dodgers are expected to evaluate him further in the coming days.

With the road trip now complete, the Dodgers return home to open a series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. Tyler Glasnow is set to take the mound for Los Angeles, while the Cardinals will counter with right-hander Sonny Gray. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
