Dodgers Recap: May deals, Ohtani blasts 20th as LA secures series win
Game 54, 5/27/2025: Dodgers 9, Guardians 5

CLEVELAND — In the second game with the Guardians at Progressive Field, Dustin May got a boost from the bottom of the order, as the Dodgers jumped ahead early and never looked back. The right-hander struck out nine over five solid innings, while a pair of recent call-ups from Oklahoma City made their presence felt and Max Muncy launched a towering upper-deck homer in a 9-5 win on Tuesday. The win guarantees a victory in the series and a winning road trip.

The Dodgers went down quietly against starter Tanner Bibee in the top of the first, but got things started in the next frame. After taking a walk, Max Muncy surprised everyone with a stolen base. Andy Pages was up next and hit an RBI single into center field, scoring Muncy. Michael Conforto smashed a hard-hit ball that went into the outfield and moved Pages to third. Dalton Rushing put another run on the board with an RBI line drive into center field, scoring Pages from third. After working a full count with no outs, Tommy Edman hit into a double play with Shohei Ohtani on deck. The Guardians intentionally walked Ohtani with Mookie Betts coming up. Betts took another walk to load the bases for Freddie Freeman who’d already had a base hit in the first. After almost throwing 40 pitches in the top of the second, Bibee got Freeman swinging on an off-speed pitch to end the inning. Dodgers 2 Guardians 0

With two outs, Tommy Edman smoked a ground ball into the gap for a single, bringing Shohei Ohtani to the plate. Though he didn’t get his third leadoff homer in a row, he nevertheless crushed his 20th homerun of season with an opposite field two-run shot adding two more runs. The even twenty homers put Shohei in the major league lead for homers, at least until Aaron Judge or Kyle Schwarber crush their next pitch. The Dodgers were up 4 to 0 and was looking like they might cruise to an easy victory.
Bottom of the 4th
That is until the bottom of the fourth. With two runners on base, May hung one up and Daniel Schneemann crushed a three-run shot into the center field seats, putting the Guardians on the board and making a game of it in an instant. May struggled in the fourth with his command but was able to strike out the next batter after giving up the home run to end the inning. Guardians 3 Dodgers 4
After giving up that 3-run shot, Dustin May locked in and sat down the first three batters to end the fifth inning. Both pitchers were sitting at 90 plus pitches. That would be it for May as he ended his night with 90P / 57S / 5IP / 4H / 3ER / 2BB / 9K / 1HR / 9 swing and miss.

With two outs, Conforto launched a solo shot deep to center field for his first homerun and RBI since April fifth. The Dodgers would end the top of the sixth adding one run onto the scoreboard. Dodgers 5 Guardians 3

With with runners on first and second, Andy Pages battled at the plate and drove a ball into center field. Centerfielder Angel Martínez misplayed the ball that scored Teoscar Hernandez and moved runners to second and third with no outs. However, the Dodgers only get one run in the inning as Rushing struck out and Edman hit into a double play to end the threat. Dodgers 6 Guardians 3
Top of the 9th
Ohtani started off the ninth with a walk, bringing Betts up to bat. Mookie hit a line drive off the left field wall, moving Ohtani to third for a single. With two outs, Max Muncy absolutely crushed a ball into the upper decks for a three-run home run giving the Dodgers a comfortable lead. Pages would get under the ball to end the inning with a fly out to left field. Dodgers 9 Guardians 3
The Guardians made it interesting, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth off Luis Garcia who spelled Ben Casparius after the Dodgers got the big lead in the top of the inning. Despite the runs, the Dodgers held on and took the three-game series with a win tonight.
Wednesday’s game could be interesting with weather coming in and it being an early game (especially for us on the West Coast). The Dodgers will (try to) put Clayton Kershaw on the mound while the Guardians scrapped their scheduled starter, Slade Ciccone. First pitch should be thrown at 10:10 AM PDT and can be seen on SportsNet LA.
