Game 49, 5/19/2024: Dodgers 3, Reds 2

CHAVEZ RAVINE, CA — That’s what we’re talking about! After being maligned for much of the year for not hitting with runners in scoring position, Shohei Ohtani put the last nail in the coffin of that talking point on Sunday afternoon. With two out in the bottom of the tenth, Ohtani ripped a game-winning single to right to walk off the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 and send Dodger fans home very happy indeed.

Runs were a at a premium in this one all day long. An unexpected pitching battle took place at Dodger Stadium as Landon Knack and Hunter Greene were trading blows in their respective matchup. After being recalled and his last start on April 30th, Knack was impressive on the mound as he delivered a stat line of 4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. Los Angeles native Hunter Greene delivered his best outing at Chavez Ravine as he went 6.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K.

Both offenses decided to show up later in the game as the first runs on the board came from the bat of Andy Pages, who pulled a ball fair down the left field bleachers for a 2 run shot in the 4th. Cincinnati tagged on their runs in the 5th with an RBI double by Santiago Espinal and Alex Vesia walked in a run with the bases loaded to tie the game 2-2 in the 7th.

Other than the blip that Vesia allowed to tie the game, the bullpen continued to produce and still held it down while Blake Treinen is still perfect from his return from the IL.

This game went into extra innings as Anthony Banda came in the 10th and made his Dodgers debut after being acquired from the Guardians two days prior. Banda would suffice for a 1-2-3 inning which allowed Shohei Ohtani to walk it off and take the series from the Reds. This was Ohtani’s first walk-off in 4 seasons and first as a Dodger. Many more to come.

LA is now 32-17 and holds an 8-game lead in the NL West.

The Dodgers turn their sights to Arizona as they are hosting the Diamondbacks for the final three games of their long 13-straight game frame. Game one starts Monday at 7:10 PM PT as Yoshinobu Yamamoto will take the bump for LA and RHP Slade Cecconi for the Snakes.
