Game 12, 4/7/2025: Dodgers 4, Nationals 6

WASHINGTON D.C. — The story of these Los Angeles Dodgers over this road trip is lack of fundamentals, which is funny considering that was the focal point of the offseason as to why the Dodgers won the 2024 World Series over the New York Yankees in five games.

After losing their first series of the young season in Philadelphia against the Fightin Phillies, the Dodgers continued their East Coast road trip heading to our nation’s capital where they’d begin a three-game series and take President Trump up on their White House visit.

Over the first six games of the season, the Dodgers did not commit a single error, which is a massive reason why the team got off to a hot start. Their last six games, however, have been a completely different story, with the team committing seven errors, including two tonight that likely cost them the win.

Right-handed pitcher Dustin May, making his second start of the year, wasn’t entirely his dominant self in the cold weather in D.C. Still, he was solid enough to give the team and the bullpen a breather, tossing six innings, allowing three runs (one earned), and keeping the team in the game.

Despite May’s efforts, it would be a two-run second inning thanks to an error by Mookie Betts, who got buckled on a scorching groundball off the bat of young Nationals outfielder Dylan Crews.

James Wood, another young outfielder for this new Nationals core, also scored that inning, thanks to an inning that was kept alive off a rare error by veteran infielder Miguel Rojas.

Despite that, May would still keep the Dodgers in striking distance despite only getting one punch out and a few whiffs on the night.

In typical fashion, Shohei Ohtani put on a show for the Dodgers faithful here in D.C., hitting three-quarters of the cycle, including a game-tying two-run home run in the top of the third inning.

Despite Ohtani’s heroics, the Dodgers offense could not get the job done, going 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position and leaving seven runners on base.

However, Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez wanted to keep it interesting for the fans watching, bringing in his closer Kyle Finnegan on back-to-back-to-back days looking for a five-out save opportunity.

In the end, despite the Dodgers’ best late efforts, the Nationals kept the Dodgers’ offense at bay, winning Game One of this three-game series.

The Dodgers will look to get back in the win column tomorrow. While left-handed starting pitcher Justin Wrobleski will join the team, Roberts said the club is still deciding whether he’ll start or if they’ll go with an opener.
