Game 6, 3/31/2025: Dodgers 6, Braves 1
CHAVEZ RAVINE, CA — Believe it or not, it took six games before Tyler Glasnow–last season’s Opening Day starter–got the ball for the Dodgers in 2025. Well, he certainly looked like a #1 starter in his debut on Monday night at Dodger Stadium. He pitched a great game, going five innings of shutout ball in another LA win–6-1 over the suddenly hapless Atlanta Braves. It was the sixth straight win to start the year, matching the LA Dodger record for most consecutive wins to begin the year, tying the 1981 Dodgers for that distinction.
Glasnow came out throwing fire, striking out two hitters in a 1-2-3 first inning. Then, in the bottom of the inning, the Dodgers got right to work. Shohei Ohtani drew a leadoff walk, and then came around to score on an absolute BOMB of a home run off the bat of Teoscar Hernandez, who slid into the three-hole in the batting order in place of the injured Freddie Freeman. Hernandez got a 1-0 center-cut heater from Braves starter Grant Holmes that he absolutely pulverized to centerfield. 432 feet later, the Dodgers had themselves a 2-0 lead.
Glasnow got a little wild after his awesome start, but he had the strikeout pitch going, so his three walks over the first five innings didn’t come back to haunt him. That’s the beauty of having a strikeout pitch. And Glasnow had his working in spades. By the fifth inning, he’d notched his 8th strikeout, securing the Jumbo Jacks early for all of Los Angeles. He was only at 79 pitches, but Dave Roberts and Mark Prior decided to pull the plug on Glasnow’s night, leaving him with a great first start in the books: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K. Awesome start.
Meanwhile, the offense kept on chugging. The home team got two more runs in the third on a Michael Conforto double and a Tommy Edman sacrifice fly. Then, in the fifth, Will Smith continued his hot start by ripping a run scoring single into centerfield, extending the lead to 5-0. Then, in the sixth, Kike Hernandez must have thought the calendar said October, cuz he smacked a no-doubter to left field to give the team a comfortable six-run lead.
Pitching-wise, the bullpen did just fine following up the great start from Glasnow. Jack Dreyer was the first arm out of the pen, followed by Alex Vesia, Tanner Scott, and Luis Garcia. Scott, who is still looking for his 2024 form, gave up a solo homer to Michael Harris III, but other than that, it was all zeroes.
The Dodgers try to keep the train moving on Tuesday evening with another game against the Bravos. And, it will be our first look at Dustin May that we’ve had in a gooood long time. May, who’s been beset by injuries over the last couple of seasons will be making his first regular season start in practically two years when he takes the mound. He’s going to face off against last season’s Cy Young award winner, lefty Chris Sale, who got knocked around a bit in his first start on Opening Day. Game time, 7:10 pm.
In case your curious, the Dodgers’ team record for most consecutive wins to start a season belongs to the legendary 1955 Brooklyn team, which rattled off ten straight wins in April of that year en route to winning the World Series, the lone title of the Brooklyn version of the team.
Stay tuned, Dodgers fans!
