Dodgers Recap: Gonsolin Sharp in Return, but Dodgers Drop Second Straight Versus Cubs

Cactus League Game 2, 2/21/2025: Cubs 7, Dodgers 3

MESA, ARZ — The Dodgers took on the Chicago Cubs this afternoon at Sloan Park but came up short, falling 3-7. Despite collecting 13 hits, the Dodgers only managed to push across three runs.

Dodgers starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin made his long-awaited return to the mound after missing all last season due to Tommy John surgery.

The 2022 All-Star pitched one inning, striking out two while allowing just one hit in a strong first outing. He’ll continue building up his workload this spring and is expected to be part of the rotation on Opening Day.

Landon Knack took over for Gonsolin in the second inning, tossing 22 pitches and allowing one run over his lone inning of work.

As Knack sees more opportunities this spring, he’ll have the chance to showcase his full arsenal, proving why he was an effective pitcher for the Dodgers last season while competing for a spot in the rotation.

Mookie Betts continued his impressive start to the spring, recording two hits while showing progress defensively at shortstop. He confidently handled a pair of routine plays and looked increasingly comfortable at the position.

Chris Okey put the Dodgers on the board in the seventh inning with a two-run homer, but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback as they ultimately fell short.

Overall, the Dodgers are still fine-tuning their offense and bullpen, but Gonsolin’s return was a bright spot. As Spring Training progresses, they’ll look to build momentum heading into their Opening Day series in Tokyo.

The Dodgers return to action tomorrow against the Kansas City Royals at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. PST.
