SAN FRANCISCO, CA — 6-6 is not exactly the start the Dodgers were hoping for out of the gate. But, on Tuesday night in San Francisco, the team fell back to .500 again, thanks in large part to the performances of some ex-Dodgers who now reside in Oracle Park.
First, it was Joc Pederson, who smashed a two-run double in the bottom of the first to give the Giants a 2-0 lead. Then, it was Alex Wood, who pitched around a lot of traffic to put up zeros into the fifth inning. Finally, it was Scott Alexander, who wriggled out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the 6th inning.
Jeez, thanks a lot guys. You all got a 2020 World Series ring and this is the thanks we get?
There wasn’t a lot to get excited about on the LA side of the ledger on Tuesday. After surviving a 31-pitch first inning where his command was all over the place, Dustin May did settle in and pitch shutout ball the rest of the way. And, in fact the game was still within reach until Evan Phillips (yes, Evan Phillips) gave up back-to-back home runs to David Villar and Brandon Crawford in the bottom of the 8th. The poor performance for the usually reliable Phillips put the game on ice for the San Franciscans and that was that.
“The command that first inning [was] certainly uncharacteristic,” manager Dave Roberts said of May’s performance. “It was good to see him bounce back, hang in there and put up some zeros in the ensuing innings to give us a chance to win, though.”
Now, can we please get a hit with guys on base? Puh-leeeeese?
Short hops
- The biggest problem the entire game was the Dodgers’ inability to hit with men on base: 1-18 in this one. Sound familiar?
- After giving up two walks that came around to score in the 1st, May actually turned in a decent outing: 5.1 IP, 2 H 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K.
- If Evan Phillips can’t be relied on, this pen is in deep, deep trouble.
- Rubber match of the three-game set on Wednesday. Kershaw vs. righty Alex Cobb. 6:40 first pitch.
