Dodgers Recap: It’s Not Sunny in Philadelphia: Phillies complete sweep of Dodgers

Game 94, 07/11/2024: Dodgers 1, Phillies 5

PHILADELPHIA, PA— I’m not mad, just disappointed. An all-around horrible series and a treacherous slew of baseball games for LA. The Dodgers fall to the Phillies 5-1 and get swept in the process. These three games can be highlighted by the struggling offense and poorly played defense on all corners of the diamond.

Old Dodgers ally Trea Turner continued his monstrous stretch to begin the game as he unloaded on a four-seamer down the middle for his ninth dinger of the year to put Philidelphia ahead early 1-0. Brandon Marsh wanted in on the fun as he began the second with a solo shot of his own to put the Phillies up early 2-0.

LA could have had a chance to get on the board earlier than expected as the bases were full of Dodgers in the second with only one out, but a Shohei Ohtani punchout and Will Smith groundout squashed what little chances they had to take an early lead.

The Dodgers would get on the board in the 5th from an unlikely source in Gavin Lux. The solo shot that Lux hit barely dinked off the foul pole and only would’ve been gone in 17/30 ballparks. This is the only run the Dodgers would score all day. Abysmal offensive performance.

The Phillies were really riding the hot hand of their starter, Aaron Nola. Nola had a stat line of 6 IP/ 4 H/ 1R/ 2 BB/ 9 K. He was making Dodgers hitters look silly and commanding both sides of the plate, but it helps also when the home plate umpires strike zone is the size of the Grand Canyon.

The Phillies revved up a back-breaking 6th inning that started off with Marsh striking again at the plate, this time by way of an RBI triple that scored Nick Castellanos from first. Johan Rojas would immediately follow up with an RBI single to drive in Marsh, extending their lead 4-1. Lefty killer Kyle Schwarber blasted a second-deck home run to put the final stab in the Dodgers heart.

An ugly series all in all in Philidelphia. If this doesn’t ring some alarm bells in that Dodgers front office to be aggressive for the trade deadline, I don’t know what else will. Time to move past it and head to Detroit where they will play the last three games against the Tigers before the much-needed All-Star break begins. Game one in Detroit starts tomorrow at 3:40 PM PT. Not an easy couple of games, but let’s all stay optimistic Dodgers fans!
