Game 152, 9/18/2024: Dodgers 8, Marlins 4

MIAMI, FL — The Los Angeles Dodgers aimed to rebound during today’s game against the Miami Marlins after a back-and-fourth offensive slugfest the night before, which ended in an 11-9 loss.

Thankfully, the Dodgers did not lose ground in the National League West as the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks would both lose their respective games, keeping the lead at 3.5 games entering today.

Yesterday, right-handed pitcher Bobby Miller was looking to rebound after another underwhelming start against the Atlanta Braves. Instead, the sophomore righty would give up four runs on seven hits in just two innings of work, leading to his demotion today.

Prior to tonight’s game, the Dodgers activated veteran right-handed pitcher Joe Kelly and selected the contract of recently signed left-handed pitcher Zach Logue. To make room on the 40-man roster for Logue, the Dodgers transferred Tyler Glasnow to the 60-day injured list and optioned Bobby Miller and Michael Grove.

With Glasnow now offically out for the rest of the season with the move and the news of rookie right-handed pitcher Gavin Stone likely done for the season due to his lingering shoulder inflammation, the Dodgers are looking for a big start from Landon Knack tonight to give them an idea if he will be on the postseason roster come October.

The Dodgers would start off the game fast against lefty Ryan Weathers, and in the top of the first inning, Shohei Ohtani would get a leadoff single and immediately steal his forty-ninth base of the season; however, nothing would come up for the Dodgers in the top of the first.

The Dodgers would continue to showcase their offensive prowess in today’s game as they would chase Weathers out of the game, who would surrender six runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings.

Will Smith started the Dodgers’ scoring in the top of the second inning with a solo home run, but it was a five-run fourth inning capped off by a two-run home run by Tommy Edman and a three-run bomb by Enrique Hernandez.

For Edman, that was his sixth home run in his last eight games played after having back-to-back multi-home run games in the Chicago Cubs series and making an impact over the previous two games of the Atlanta Braves four-game set.

By that point, the Dodgers had a six-run lead, which was more than plenty as Landon Knack would rebound well after his disastrous two-inning start in Atlanta, going five solid innings of shutout baseball, allowing two hits, two walks, and striking out seven Marlins hitters.

Knack’s velocity was also something to watch tonight as the right-hands starter, usually hovered around 93mph, came into today’s game, averaging 95-96mph in the first inning and maintaining it for most of the game.

The Dodgers bullpen held the lead, with Joe Kelly throwing a scoreless one-two-three inning in his first appearance after being activated off the 15-day injured list.

However, new Dodgers relief pitcher Zach Logue lasted only a short time in his Dodgers debut; he faced only three batters and allowed three straight hits and two runs.

Despite the hiccup, the Dodgers pen maintained the four-run lead as the Dodgers would add on in the top of the eighth inning as Chris Taylor would rip a two-out two-run single, making it an 8-3 ballgame.

The Dodgers would win game two of this three-game series and will go for the series win tomorrow afternoon with right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty on the bump against Marlins righty Edward Cabrera with the first pitch at 1:10 PM PT. The magic number to win the National League West is now down to seven.
