Cactus League Game 1, 2/20/2025: Dodgers 4, Cubs 12

GLENDALE, ARI– As Spring Training gets underway, here are a few key takeaways from today’s game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs.

Today, officially marked the start of Spring Training games at Camelback Ranch, Although the Dodgers fell to the Cubs, 12-4, it’s important to remember that these early Spring Training games hold little significance as teams begin to ramp up for the regular season.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto made his much-anticipated debut, pitching 1.2 innings. He allowed three hits, struck out two, and gave up no runs. While Yamamoto’s outing was encouraging, he did surrender some hard contact. Fortunately for the Dodgers, those hits didn’t result in any runs.

The biggest concern from the game came when Bobby Miller was struck in the head by a comebacker. Miller, who pitched less than an inning and gave up two runs, was able to walk off the field under his own power. However, questions remain about the extent of his injury and whether he will miss any time moving forward.

On the offensive side, the Dodgers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning thanks to newly signed outfielder Eddie Rosario, who launched a two-run home run. Rosario signed a minor league deal with a non-roster invite to Spring Training and is seen as a depth piece. He’ll look to continue making his case for a spot on the big league roster as camp progresses.

Dodgers’ top prospect Zyhir Hope, ranked No. 75 on MLB.com’s Top 100 Prospects list, had an outstanding day defensively, making a pair of spectacular plays in left field. He flashed his athleticism with a remarkable diving grab in the top of the fifth inning, followed by an impressive catch at the wall in the sixth. Hope’s performance showcased his exceptional range in the corner outfield spot, underscoring his potential as a key defensive asset.

Only time will tell how the roster shapes up as the Dodgers prepare for Opening Day. While there were a number of pitching changes throughout the game and solid performances across the roster, these are a few key takeaways from the Dodgers’ first Spring Training matchup.

The Dodgers will be back in action for their next Spring Training game at Sloan Park in Mesa, Ariz., with the first pitch scheduled for 12:05 p.m. PST.
