Dodgers Recap: Ohtani, Muncy propel Dodgers to win nailbiter over KC
Game 83, 6/27/2025: Dodgers 5, Royals 4

KANSAS CITY — In a game that tested their resilience, the Dodgers turned minimal offense into maximum output and leaned on their bullpen to lock down a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals Friday night at Kauffman Stadium. Despite collecting only four hits, the Dodgers found a way to win behind Shohei Ohtani‘s fireworks and a clutch ninth-inning double play that slammed the door shut.
Ohtani and Muncy Provide the Firepower
The Dodgers wasted no time getting on the board, as Shohei Ohtani launched his 29th home run of the season on the fourth pitch of the game, a towering shot to right-center that electrified the visitors’ dugout and gave L.A. an early 1-0 lead.
After Kansas City answered with a run in the bottom of the first, Max Muncy took over in the second. Following a two-out walk to Tommy Edman, Muncy crushed a two-run homer to center off Royals starter Noah Cameron, putting the Dodgers ahead 3-1.
Ohtani sparked the go-ahead rally again in the fifth, ripping a triple into the right-center gap to score Kiké Hernández and tie the game at 4-4. On the next pitch, Mookie Betts delivered a go-ahead RBI single up the middle to bring Ohtani home and give L.A. a lead they would never relinquish.
That would be the final hit of the night for the Dodgers — but it was all they’d need.
Dustin May Struggles, Bullpen Slams the Door
Dustin May didn’t have his best stuff, allowing four runs on six hits across four innings, including a two-run shot by Bobby Witt Jr. in the second that briefly gave Kansas City a 4-3 lead.
But the Dodgers bullpen picked up their starter in a big way. Luis García, Lou Trivino, Anthony Banda, Alex Vesia, and Tanner Scott combined for five shutout innings, scattering five hits and stranding runners in nearly every frame.
Trivino (3-0) earned the win after escaping a jam in the sixth, highlighted by a successful pickoff of pinch-runner Tyler Tolbert at first base. Banda and Vesia preserved the one-run lead into the ninth, and Scott earned his 18th save, but not without some ninth-inning drama.
With one out in the ninth, the Royals put the tying and winning runs on base via a single and a walk. Salvador Perez then blooped a single to right to load the bases with one out. But just when it seemed the Royals were poised to walk it off, Jac Caglianone hit a sharp ground ball that turned into a game-saving 4-6-3 double play, with Edman to Betts to Freeman sealing the win. The low throw on the turn from Betts required every bit of Freddie Freeman‘s gold glove to save the night.
Efficient Offense, Excellent Timing
The Dodgers were out-hit 11-4 and struck out nine times, but they made their few hits count. All five runs came in the first five innings, and each scoring play came with just the right combination of power and timing.
Ohtani finished 2-for-3 with a homer, triple, walk, and two RBIs. Muncy added his 13th home run of the season and walked once. Betts added a hit and the go-ahead RBI to score Ohtani after his triple, while Edman and Hernández contributed by getting on base and setting the table.
Despite Freeman, Smith, Pages, and Hernández going a combined 0-for-13, the Dodgers once again proved why they remain one of the best in the league: they don’t always need a barrage of hits — just the right ones at the right time.
Final Thoughts
With the win, the Dodgers improve to 52-31 and maintain their hold atop the NL West. More importantly, they continue to show they can win in multiple ways — whether by slugging, small ball, or, as in this case, with clutch pitching and defense.
The bullpen’s five scoreless innings were a reminder of how dangerous this team is when their relievers are on. And with Ohtani heating up again at the plate, L.A. has every reason to feel confident heading into the weekend.
For now, Dodgers fans can take a breath — and maybe rewatch that 4-6-3 double play a few times. It was the perfect ending to a gutsy win.
The road trip will end with two day games. Saturday (Ohtani Alert!) will be a 1:10 PDT, and first pitch on Sunday will be at 11:10 AM. Then, home for the White Sox and Astros* over the holiday weekend. Let’s finish this thing strong!
