Cactus League Game 18, 3/8/2025: Athletics 7, Dodgers 5
GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Los Angeles Dodgers faced off against the Sacramento Athletics in a Sunday afternoon Cactus League matchup. Blake Snell made his second start of the spring, pitching 3.2 innings while allowing five hits and four runs while striking out five. Despite some struggles, Snell has time to make adjustments, especially with the Dodgers set to travel to Japan in less than two weeks—a trip he is not expected to be part of.
In the bottom of the fourth, James Outman put the Dodgers on the board with a three-run homer, cutting the deficit to one. For Outman, who has struggled while competing for the starting center field job, this was a much-needed boost and a key moment in the Dodgers’ potential comeback.
In the top of the fifth, newly signed reliever Giovanny Gallegos struggled, surrendering a two-run homer that extended the Athletics’ lead to 6-3. In his lone inning of work, Gallegos allowed two hits and two runs and recorded one strikeout.
Following Gallegos’ outing, the Dodgers turned to Kirby Yates, Blake Treinen, and Tanner Scott out of the bullpen. Yates worked a scoreless inning, but Treinen and Scott surrendered a run each, allowing the A’s to extend their lead to 7-5.
In the bottom of the seventh, with the bases loaded, Hyeseong Kim delivered a two-RBI single, bringing David Bote and Chris Taylor home to cut the Athletics’ lead to two as the game moved into the late innings.
Overall, the Dodgers’ offense had its moments, highlighted by James Outman’s home run and Hyeseong Kim’s two-RBI single, but they couldn’t overcome the runs scored by the Athletics. Much of the lineup was shut down throughout the game, making a comeback difficult.
On the pitching side, Blake Snell’s early struggles set the tone, and while the bullpen had some solid moments, Blake Treinen and Tanner Scott surrendered a run each, adding to the Dodgers’ deficit. As they prepare for the start of the season, the team will need to find more consistency at the plate and shore up their pitching to limit the runs they’ve been giving up in recent spring games.
The Dodgers will return to action tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch expected at 1:05 p.m. PDT. Yoshinobu Yamamoto will take the mound for the Dodgers as they play against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Camelback Ranch.
