Dodgers Recap: Pitchers get shelled in loss to D-backs

PHOENIX, AZ — On a normal night, we’d be talking about the offense. We’d be talking about Freddie Freeman and his four-hit night, or James Outman and his first inning homer, or Jason Heyward‘s third home run of the season.

But nope, we can’t talk about any of that stuff, because the Dodgers’ pitching staff was absolutely TERRIBLE on Saturday, getting knocked around in almost every inning of the ballgame. The Arizona Diamondbacks got TWELVE runs off of SEVENTEEN hits, and basically pummeled every pitcher that Dave Roberts trotted out there.

“I thought we swung the bats well, and when you score seven, eight runs, you expect to win a ballgame,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “But it seemed like every guy we were running out there, we couldn’t put up a zero. It doesn’t happen very often with our ballclub, but you’ve got to give those guys credit.”

The Diamondbacks scored six off starter Noah Syndergaard, one off Alex Vesia, two off Brusdar Graterol, and three off Andre Jackson. They scored in all but two innings and put up crooked numbers three separate times.

So, yeah, it was not great.

Short hops

  • The Dodgers now trail the D-backs in the season series 3-4.
  • Freddie Freeman is now hitting .429.
  • James Outman’s great start continues. His OPS is now 1.429.
  • Starting to seem like the Heyward resurgence might have something to it.
  • Meanwhile, over on J Hey’s old squad, the Cubs, Cody Bellinger is hitting .185.
  • The Dodgers try to salvage a split with the D-backs with a Sunday matinee. Rookie Michael Grove vs. righty Ryne Nelson. First pitch: 1:10 pm.
Bad night on the mound for the Dodgers…
