CHAVEZ RAVINE, CA — Oh, Mookie, you’re so fine, you’re so fine, you blow my mind, hey Mookie! Forgive my reference to Toni Basil and the 80s, but I’m at a loss for words to describe just how volcanically hot Mookie Betts is right now. The Dodger superstar hit two more home runs on Friday night, and a run-scoring double for good measure. That provided more than enough punch to knock out old pal Tyler Anderson and the crosstown rival Angels 11-4.
Beyond Betts, the Dodgers other All-Star looked every bit the part as well. Freddie Freeman hit a solo home run in the first to get the Dodgers on the board. J.D. Martinez contributed a solo homer and an RBI double to the cause, and Will Smith put the icing on the cake with a late inning home run that pushed the Dodgers to their tenth and eleventh runs.
Tony Gonsolin had a good game, but got dinged for a couple of homers himself, the most costly one being a three-run jack from Mickey Moniak to tighten the score to 4-3 in the fourth. However, that was about as close as the Angels would get as Betts and company were relentless in their attack.
“He’s really himself this year and it’s really fun to watch,” manager Dave Roberts said of Betts. “I think that he’s continually getting more comfortable with us, but this is as comfortable as I’ve seen him, and it’s certainly showing on the field.”
The Dodgers wrap up the first half of the year with one more game against the Halos at the Ravine on Saturday night. 6:10 start time. Looks like it’ll be Johnny Wholestaff on the mound. Let’s finish this thing off right!
