Dodgers Recap: Gonsolin struggles with command as offense unable to solve David Peterson
Game 52, 5/24/2025: Dodgers 2, Mets 5

QUEENS, NY — It was a windy evening in Citi Field, where both teams had burned their bullpens the night before and were looking for the starters to go at least six innings. One team got that, and it wasn’t your Los Angeles Dodgers. The Mets’ pitching, riding the best start of the season from lefty David Peterson, outlasted the Dodgers as New York evened up the series with a 5-2 win over the LA.
Top of the 2nd
The Dodgers got on the board first in this one. Andy Pages hit a line drive single to right field. Tommy Edman was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Kiké Hernandez hit a soft ground ball up the middle that scored Pages and moved Edman to third. Dalton Rushing Then hit a dribbler up the middle that scored Edman. A good start for the Dodgers as they went into the bottom of the second with a 2-0.
The Mets answered in the bottom of the second after Tony Gonsolin allowed runners on first and second. Brett Baty singled on a line drive to right field that scored Jared Young. Gonsolin got out of the inning allowing only one run to end the second inning.
Bottom of the 4th
Gonsolin’s struggles with his command continued in tonight’s game. After loading the bases with two outs, Starling Marte singled on a ground ball to second that bounced over Gonsolin’s head, scoring Luis Torrens. Juan Soto, struggling mightily of late, smoked a double off the center field wall scoring Baty and Francisco Lindor. Starling Marte was thrown out at home plate with a throw by Mookie Betts to Dalton Rushing. Mets 4 Dodgers 2
After five innings pitched, Gonsolin’s night was done as Anthony Banda comes off the bench for the sixth inning. Tony’s line for the night, 88P / 52S / 5IP / 7H / 4ER / 3BB / 4K / 11 swing and miss. Another learning experience for the Cat Man, who will be looking to improve on his next start.
The problem for the Dodgers in this one was Mets lefty David Peterson, who was masterful. He struck out Shohei Ohtani three times, and held the “Big Three” to just one hit–a harmless Mookie Betts single. Things aren’t going to get much easier on Sunday when the Dodgers see Kodai Senga and his 1.43 ERA.
With the bullpen in dire straits after Friday’s marathon, Bobby Miller was called up and called on to give a couple of innings of work in the seventh and eighth. It was a bit of a mixed bag: a 1-2-3 seventh, but he surrendered a key insurance run to the Mets in the eighth, thanks to a Brett Baty double off the wall. Still, it served its purpose, giving all the bullpen pieces except Anthony Banda a night of rest. That will help for the rest of the road trip.
Opinion
With this being a tough road series, the Dodgers offense needs to produce run support for the pitching staff. In the past seven games Ohtani has 32AB / 4R / 6H / 1HR / 2RBI / 2BB / 9SO / .188AVG / .235OBP / .313SLG. The question, is Ohtani doing too much getting built up to pitch and it’s affecting his hitting?
Mets pitching shut down the Dodgers offense with weak ground balls and double plays. The Dodgers look for a win tomorrow to take the three-game series two games to one. First pitch for tomorrow’s game will be at 4:10 PM PST and can be seen on ESPN.
