Dodgers Recap: Too many walks, too much mud sink Dodgers in sloppy finale in Philly

Game 11, 4/6/2025: Dodgers 7, Phillies 8

PHILADELPHIA — Usually, you’re not supposed to take a walk on rainy days, but the Phillies didn’t take that advice against the Dodgers on Sunday. They walked ELEVEN times, and though the team battled back to take the lead late, in the end they could not get out of their own way, and they lose the finale of the first series of the year against the Phillies, dropping the rubber game by a score of 8-7

This one got off to a great start for the visiting Dodgers. Teoscar Hernandez drilled an opposite field homer in the top of the first, and Tyler Glasnow looked sharp in his first two frames, both scoreless.

Then, the wheels fell off the apple cart for the Boys in Blue. It started to rain and Glasnow just could not get comfortable on the mound in the bottom of the third inning. He was constantly fighting to keep his cleats free of mud, and never quite managed to do so. It showed in his command. He walked three hitters and gave up a a run-scoring bloop single to Bryce Harper and allowed a run to score on a wild pitch before walking the bases full yet again. Dave Roberts had seen enough. He brought in Alex Vesia to face Nick Castellanos and… BOOM! Grand slam for the Phils. Ugh. It looked like this one was out of reach already.

However, the Dodgers were far from done on Sunday. Led by more heroics from Teoscar Hernandez, the Dodgers scored five straight runs. A solo shot in the fourth made it 6-3 Phillies. Then, Teo hit a run scoring double in the fifth shaved the Philadelphia lead to two.

The Dodgers made it all the way back in top of the seventh. And who else? Teo hit a sacrifice fly for his fifth RBI of the day to tie the ball game. Then, Will Smith banged a double off the right field wall to score the go-ahead run. It looked like the Dodgers might be on the verge of yet another unlikely comeback.

Not so fast, said the Phillies. Off the usually reliable Blake Treinen, the home team score a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead. Treinen gave up a leadoff double to Bryce Harper (a ball on which Andy Pages took a HORRIBLE route), and then walked the next hitter to put a couple on with nobody out. He got Grand Slammer Nick Castellanos to fly out, but then a couple of rough breaks. A wounded duck off the bat of Bryson Stott just evaded the glove of Tommy Edman at second to score the tying run. And finally, a potential 5-4-3 double play ball ended up scoring a run when Edmundo Sosa just barely beat out a throw to first. Ugh.

The Dodgers went quietly in the eighth, and in their half, the Phillies got a rally going when Luis Garcia walked the bases loaded with just one out (the 9th, 10th and 11th walks of the day). However, they got a rare 3-2 double play on a groundball to first baseman Kike Hernandez, who stepped on the bag and threw it to catcher Will Smith for the final out of the inning.

The Dodgers had the top of the order coming up in the ninth, but reliever Jose Alvarado retired the Dodgers 1-2-3 to finish off the game.

So the first matchup between these two titans comes to a mess, if entertaining, end. You won’t see them hook up again until September, so they’ll have to watch each other from afar until then. The Dodgers now head to the nation’s capital for a three-gamer with the Washington Nationals to wrap up the road trip. And, with Blake Snell headed to the IL, the Dodgers’ pitching depth will be challenged early this season. For Monday, it’ll be
