Dodgers Recap: Walker puts on a fireworks show for Arizona as Dodgers drop series

Christian Walker crushes his second home run and fifth of this series (Diamondbacks Twitter/X)

Game 88, 7/4/2024: Dodgers 3, Diamondbacks 9

Chavez Ravine, CA — Happy Fourth of July Dodgers fans! Nothing represents American patriotism more than baseball and fireworks. Unfortunately, the Dodgers fell short on Independence Day to the D-Backs and dropped the series with a final of 9-3. Landon Knack was on the bump today and was tasked with eating up as many innings as possible due to the bullpen being taxed these last couple of games. He didn’t have the best of starts as his final line score was: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 6 K.

It was Arizona who jump-started the fireworks early as old Dodger ally Joc Pederson crushed a solo shot for Arizona’s first run on the board and continued where they left off last night. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Dodgers and D-Backs series without the mention of Christian Walker absolutely torching the baseball at Chavez Ravine. Walker smashed a ball to left field to double up the Snakes’ lead to two. Seriously, please ban this guy from ever taking another at-bat in Dodger Stadium. Hopefully, he would stop there right…?

I spoke way too soon as in the top of the third after a lead-off walk to Pederson, Walker again blasted another home run, this time a two-run shot, to extend the Snakes’ lead by four. Ok, this is getting ridiculous now, five home runs in this series alone feel like video game numbers.

The Dodgers finally put their first couple of runs on the board in a big way as in the fourth, a lead-off single for Andy Pages, Miguel Vargas knock, and Chris Taylor free pass had the bases full of Dodgers with only one out. Kike Hernandez would come up to the plate and hit an RBI groundout to give LA their first run of the game. Knack’s battery mate Austin Barnes came to the plate and blooped an RBI single that allowed a pair of Dodgers to score and make this a one-run deficit.

Arizona would get one of those runs back after Corbin Carroll reached on a fielding error by Freddie Freeman and swiped second base, allowing Ketel Marte to smack an RBI single to left field and push their lead up 5-3. This wouldn’t be the last runs for Arizona as the bases were loaded in the ninth and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. cracked a single that added two more runs for Arizona. The cherry on top came from the bat of Gabriel Moreno and the Snakes secured the series win with a score of 9-3.

The Dodgers dropped this series against Arizona and now turn their sights to the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers come into town for a three-game weekend set. The trusty ace Tyler Glasnow will take the mound for game one Friday night at 7:10 PM PT and James Paxton will be on the bump Saturday evening at 4:15 PT PM. It’s a shame the Dodgers couldn’t get a win on America’s birthday, but we all here at DodgersBeat hope that you enjoyed your Fourth of July with loved ones. Let’s get back in the win column tomorrow!
