Dodgers Recap: Team gets put in tough spot early but Justin Wrobleski is able to salvage the bullpen as they go for series win tomorrow

Game 137, 9/01/2024: Dodgers 3, Diamondbacks 14

PHOENIX, AZ — After getting his first Major League win, LHP Justin Wrobleski took the mound for Los Angeles to keep the win streak alive. Unfortunately, he gave up eight runs in the second inning and Arizona’s RHP Brandon Pfaadt shut down the Dodgers offense.

Unlike the previous two games, the first inning of game three was uneventful with no runs scored. Both teams got out of the first inning with some good defense and pitching. Today’s umpire was not helping both teams with missed strike calls.

After a Gavin Lux walk and Tommy Edman single in the top of the second. The Dodgers left two runners on base with strike outs by Muncy and Kiermaier. Austin Barnes flew out to center field for the third out. The DBacks got on the board first with a single by Eugenio Suarez scoring Randal Grichuk. While Wrobleski struggled with command issues and first pitch strikes, the Diamondbacks put eight runs on the board.

In the top of third, Dave Roberts pulled Teoscar Hernandez, Freddie Freeman, and Mookie Betts. Kiki Hernandez took over first base, Andy Pages moved to right field, and Chris Taylor went to right field. It appears Dave Roberts didn’t want to risk injuries with the playoffs coming soon and such a big lead the Diamondbacks had in the third, Dave Roberts waved the white flag.

The Dodgers finally got a run in the third inning, while leaving four runners on base in the fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the sixth, the Dodgers scored two early runs with an Austin Barnes single scoring Edman and Kevin Kiermaier sacrifice single scoring Lux. Ohtani came up to bat with Barnes on first base with a chance to cut into the lead a little more and strikes out for the third time to end the inning.

Wrobleski’s day was done in the top of the sixth. He bounced back after a rough start in the first two innings and retired the next 10 batters. He finishes with 99P / 58S / 5.1IP / 10H / 10ER / 2BB / 2K / 2HR / 6.82ERA. RHP Michael Grove replaced Wrobleski and got an inning ending double play.

The Dodgers took a beating today in Arizona. The team didn’t really show much fight after the second inning and went 1-for 10 with runners in scoring position, but tomorrow is a new day. Dodgers RHP Jack Flaherty Arizona’s LHP Eduardo Rodriguez takes the mound for the final game of the of the series. Game four starts at 1:10pm PST and can be seen on SportsNet LA.
