Dodgers Recap: Yoshinobu Dominates; Muncy walks it off in the the tenth

Game 49, 5/20/2025: Dodgers 4, D-backs 3

CHAVEZ RAVINE — In a dramatic Tuesday night showdown at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers snapped a four-game losing streak with a wild 4–3 win in 10 innings over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Max Muncy’s sacrifice fly sealed the walk-off after Los Angeles gave up a late lead, capping off a night that featured a pitching gem from Yoshinobu Yamamoto and clutch performances from Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, and Tommy Edman.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto got out of the top of the first with a clean inning. He struggled a bit with his first pitch strike but got some weak contact from the first three batters. The Dodgers offense actually came up to bat in the bottom of the first not looking to catch up.

After a Shohei Ohtani flyout to left field. Mookie Betts hit an opposite field line drive to get on base. Unfortunately, Freddie Freeman hit into a double play to end the inning.

The Dodgers got on the board first with a Will Smith line drive double down the left field line scoring Freeman. Max Muncy took a walk with two outs and Andy Pages hit into an inning ending shot to the short stop for the third out.

Yamamoto was masterful for the Dodgers, tossing seven no-hit innings before Ketel Marte broke it up with a leadoff single in the eighth. The Japanese right-hander struck out nine and walked just two, continuing his dominant rookie campaign and lowering his ERA to 1.86. Yoshi ended his night in dominate fashion 110P / 62S / 7IP / 1H / 0ER / 2BB / 9K / 10 swing and miss.

The bottom of the seventh got a little dicey. Alex Vesia loaded the bases and got two key outs. Dave Roberts made the call and brought in Ben Casparius who finished off Arizona and leaving the bases loaded. Ohtani hit a double into left center field in the bottom of eighth, Betts hit weak ground ball to third for the second out. Freddie Freeman would strike swinging to end the inning

Arizona tied the game up in the top of the ninth when Tanner Scott gave a home run to Gabriel Moreno on a fly ball to left field. Then, in the bottom of the frame, Will Smith took a walk, putting the winning run on first base. Muncy struck out and Pages flied out giving the Dodgers two outs. Teoscar Hernandez came off the bench and took a walk that moved Smith into scoring position. Kike Hernandez came up to bat and immediately got 3-0 count, Hernandez would eventually strikeout to put the game in overtime.

Tanner Scott started off the tenth inning and gave up another home run to Corbin Carroll that gave Arizona the lead in the top of the tenth.

Tommy Edman came up to bat in the bottom of the tenth and poked one opposite field that scored Kiki. Arizona would Ohtani and Betts hit a sacrifice fly that moved Edman to third. Ohtani would steal second base, and the D-Backs would walk Freeman loading the bases with one out. Will Smith got hit by a pitch and Edman would come in to tie the game up. Max Muncy walked it off with a sac fly to center field giving the Dodgers the win.

Freddie Freeman continued his torrid pace at the plate in this one, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk. He now sports a .371 batting average and a 1.102 OPS. Shohei Ohtani also doubled and walked twice, adding his 11th stolen base for good measure.

Will Smith drove in two, including the game-tying run on the HBP, and extended his OPS to .963. Though the bottom of the order struggled, Dave Roberts’ substitutions—particularly Edman for Kim and Teoscar Hernández for Rojas—played a key role in the comeback.

Arizona will put Corbin Burnes on the mound tomorrow while Dustin May looks to bounce back from his last performance. First pitch is at 7:10 PM PST and can be seen on SportsNet LA.
