Fresh after re-signing fan-favorite Teoscar Hernández to a 3-year, $66 million deal, along with other noteworthy additions such as lefty Blake Snell and outfielder Michael Conforto, the Los Angeles Dodgers 2025 roster is starting to take shape. However, according to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, the Dodgers are expected to discuss a contract extension with their skipper, Dave Roberts.
It comes as no surprise that the Los Angeles Dodgers, led by President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman and Chief Executive Officer Stan Kasten, would let Dave Roberts enter the 2025 season as a lame-duck manager, with only one year left on his current contract entering the 2025 season.
Dodgers executives have said they would first focus on addressing their roster needs this offseason, before engaging in negotiations with Roberts. But as the calendar turns, that time appears to be approaching, with a new contract for their manager — one that should rival, if not top, Counsell’s record-breaking deal — remaining as one of the last big boxes on their winter to-do list.
Since Dave Roberts was hired by the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2016 offseason, replacing Don Mattingly, who lost back-to-back National League Division Series, Roberts has been one of the most successful managers in baseball history.
Roberts has led the club to nine consecutive postseason appearances, eight division titles, four NL Pennants, and two World Series championships. Ignoring the 60-game 2020 campaign where the Dodgers went 43-17, the club has never won less than 91 games in a season under Roberts’s guidance.
In his first season at the helm, Roberts led his team to the National League Championship Series as a rookie manager, winning his first and only National League Manager of the Year Award.
Overall, Roberts has a lifetime record of 851-507 as a manager, giving him a .627 winning percentage. That’s the highest winning percentage of any manager in MLB history, with at least 1000 games managed in his career, translating to approximately 102 wins in a 162-game season.
Interestingly, Harris suggests that any Robert deal will likely rival or succeed past current Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell’s massive 5-year, $40 million deal last offseason. However, Roberts’s resume is much more robust and awarded than Counsell, who has yet to appear in a World Series and has not advanced past the National League Division Series since the 2018 season.
Still, it is expected that the Dodgers and Roberts will engage in the coming weeks about their future together, and due to the overhyping success since Roberts has taken over, a long-term deal will likely be reached.
