We are less than two weeks from the July 30th Major League Baseball trade deadline. Despite players and coaches preparing for the 2024 mid-summer classic in Arlington, Texas, for the all-star game, the trade rumors are in full swing, including a massive rumor involving the Los Angeles Dodgers.
A few weeks back, the Athletics Jim Bowden reported that the Detroit Tigers, if blown away by an offer to help speed up their stagnant rebuild, would consider trading American League Cy Young frontrunner Tarik Skubal.
However, those rumors became more solidified. According to Sports Illistrated’s Tom Verducci, the Dodgers and Orioles have checked in on Skubal, including preparing to package multiple top prospects in a potential offer.
The sources stated that it is doubtful that the Tigers will deal with Skubal by this deadline, they added that everything has a price.
The Tigers, who have been rebuilding since the 2015 season, would likely look for a mix of Major League-ready players along with some top prospects on offense. They have struggled to hit this season, which is a massive reason why they are in fourth place in the American League Central and three games under .500 with a 47-50 record.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, after the offseason they had along with the multiple injuries suffered this season, especially in the starting rotation where starters Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Walker Buehler are all on the injured list along with a disappointing second season from Bobby Miller, who has an ERA north of eight need rotation depth and a frontline starter come October.
Skubal, 27, is still under two years of control after the 2024 regular season. Despite an injury history in previous seasons, Skubal has put it all together in 2024. The American League Cy Young favorite is 10-3 with a 2.41 ERA, 0.879 WHIP, and one hundred forty strikeouts in one hundred sixteen innings pitched this season.
I wrote earlier about how the Dodgers could get creative in a deal and try to acquire Skubal and take on Javier Báez’s contract, as the Tigers would gladly like to get off the hook for his $73 million owned the next three seasons. You can check out the rest of that idea below.
