Dodgers Rumors: Dodgers Linked to Rockies’ Third Baseman Ryan McMahon Per Bob Nightengale

LOS ANGELES— Wake up and get your rumor hat on as the Los Angeles Dodgers trade mill is in full swing as the 2025 Major League Baseball regular season marches closer to June.

While the July 31st trade deadline is still several weeks away, rumors are circulating about plenty of players around the league, particularly teams that are almost certainly out of postseason contention.

One such team is the Los Angeles Dodgers’ National League Western division rival, the Colorado Rockies, who have only eight wins this season and are on pace for a historic 111-loss season, per Baseball Reference.

The Rockies, who just dismissed long-time manager Bud Black last week, will most certainly try to trade whatever asset they have as they look to build toward the future. One such name that has not been shy to trade rumors in recent years is third baseman Ryan McMahon.

McMahon, 30, is entering the final three years of his 6-year, $70 million contract he signed back during the 2022 offseason, avoiding his final year of arbitration and extending him until the 2027 season.

The third baseman is not having the best year this season, hitting .201/.326/.365 with a .691 OPS and 87 OPS+ in forty-six games.

However, according to Major League Baseball insider Bob Nightengale, the Dodgers are one of several teams that have shown interest in McMahon.

“Several teams, including the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers, are closely monitoring Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon in case he’s traded this summer.”

The Dodgers’ interest in McMahon does make sense to some degree as current third baseman Max Muncy has stuggled for the most part this season hitting .205/.326/.336 with a .661 OPS but has turned a corner over the last week hitting .259 with seven hits, two home runs and nine RBIs since May 10th.

However, the 2025 season is the final guaranteed year on Max Muncy’s contract, but the slugging third baseman does have a $10 million club option for 2026.

This move could symbolize the Dodgers’ looking at the long-term picture at third base. There is no plan after this season, and McMahon being under control for a few more seasons could be enticing for Andrew Friedman.

However, McMahon does have some red flags, including a below-league-average 80 OPS+ away from Coors Field, which will outweigh his elite defense at the hot corner, which ranks in the 89th percentile in OAA.

However, for a franchise like the Rockies, which rarely trades, it’s hard to imagine they’ll trade a well-liked player in the organization like McMahon to any team, but even harder to imagine it being the Dodgers.
