Dodgers Rumors: Emmet Sheehan Expected to be Activated this Week

LOS ANGELES, CA— Reinforcements are reportedly arriving for the Los Angeles Dodgers starting rotation as right-handed pitcher Emmet Sheehan is expected to be activated off the 60-day injured list this week, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.
Sheehan, 25, missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery after having a successful rookie campaign during the ’23 season, posting a 4.92 ERA in 60.1 innings for Los Angeles between the rotation and bullpen.
Heading into the 2024 season with the backend of the Dodgers rotation up for grabs, Sheehan was in a prime position to earn the fifth and final spot before getting shut down with an injury after his first bullpen session of spring training.
Thirteen months post-operation and four minor league rehab starts later, Sheehan will likely rejoin a Dodgers rotation that is desperate for help after losing Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Roki Sasaki, and Tony Gonsolin to injury.
The Dodgers’ rotation has pitched the second-fewest innings in the majors this season, edging only the Miami Marlins with 325.2 innings. Those innings haven’t been overly effective, either, ranking 22nd in baseball with a 4.37 ERA.
That most certainly played a part in activating Sheehan now, when he hasn’t topped more than 3.1 innings in any of his minor-league rehab starts.
While Sheehan’s rehab could be seen as rushed, with only four starts in a month, the righty was eclectic with twenty-one strikeouts in 11.1 innings pitched and a 3.97 ERA.
Prior to tonight’s Game Two of a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts did not outright confirm Sheehan’s activation, stating they’ll confirm after his bullpen session tomorrow.
“He’s here, he’s still on rehab. He’s going to throw a ‘pen tomorrow, and if all goes well, there’s an opportunity for him to be activated. So we’ll see. We’ll keep kicking the can until he throws his ‘pen.”
Regardless, things are trending in the right direction for Sheehan and the Dodgers’ pitching staff, which has seen multiple encouraging updates over the last several days.
