We are less than two weeks away from the official start of the 2025 Major League Baseball season, with pitchers and catchers reporting to Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona, for spring training. Yet it seems that the Dodgers’ offseason plans are not finished.
Andrew Friedman and Co. have been extremely busy this winter, adding multiple star players such as lefties Blake Snell and Tanner Scott and retaining key members of their 2024 World Series Championship roster, fan-favorite Teoscar Hernández and Blake Treinen. However, fans wonder what the team will decide on free agent utility player Kiké Hernández.
Hernández, 33, is a beloved member of the Dodgers and was an incremental piece to the Dodgers last October, hitting .294 with two home runs and an OPS of .808 en route to his second career World Series victory.
The Dodgers reacquired Hernández from the Boston Red Sox before the 2023 Major League Baseball trade deadline and re-signed the veteran infielder to a 1-year, $14 million deal after teams broke for camp.
Hernández himself stated that a reunion with Los Angeles was a top priority for him this offseason in an interview with The Shop in December, but where do things stand between Hernández and the Dodgers now?
According to Dodgers insider Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register, during an interview with Dodgers Territory, he stated that he had not heard Kiké’s name connected to the Dodgers, pouring cold water on a reunion at this moment.
Could he be? Yes. Is he? I am not hearing his name from the Dodgers at all. So take that to mean whatever you want to take it to mean
If you recall, this situation happened last winter as the Dodgers had to decide between recently acquired outfielder Manuel Margot or Hernández with their 40-man roster full. A decision could not be made until a spot was created.
Ultimately, the Dodgers opted for a Hernández reunion based on his October performance alone, which paid off for the organization in the end.
As the roster is currently constructed, a logjam is on the position player side. Still, it may be down to whether the Dodgers can offload Chris Taylor this winter (easier said than done), as having both on this roster would seem redundant.
There are still two weeks of the offseason, but we could see multiple players remain unsigned entering spring training, including Kiké Hernández, as he awaits a decision from the Dodgers.
