Dodgers Rumors: Nationals Interested in Josh Byrnes for GM Position

ARIZONA, CA—With the end of the 2025 Major League Baseball regular season fast approaching, it will also mark the end of the season entirely for eighteen teams across the league, including the Washington Nationals.
After winning the 2019 World Series, the team has missed the postseason for six consecutive seasons. In mid-summer, the organization made swift changes to the team, firing long-time manager Dave Martinez and General Manager Mike Rizzo.
For the rest of the season, the Nationals appointed Mike DeBartolo as interim general manager. As the season ends and the offseason approaches after the 2025 World Series, the team is now looking for other potential candidates, including senior vice president Josh Byrnes, according to Ken Rosenthal, Sahadev Sharma, and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic.
As the Washington Nationals look for a new head of baseball operations, the club has contacted Chicago Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins, Arizona Diamondbacks executive Amiel Sawdaye and Los Angeles Dodgers senior vice president Josh Byrnes, according to league sources briefed on the search.
It is also believed that the Nationals interviewed Boston Red Sox assistant general manager Eddie Romero.
Byrnes is in his tenth season with the Dodgers, overseeing scouting and player development, among other duties.
Byrnes has been a sought-after name among teams looking to fill front office vacancies in recent years. He was also in consideration for the role of president of baseball operations with the Detroit Tigers before they hired Scott Harris.
Byrnes previously held the roles of executive vice president and general manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2005 to 2010, and for the San Diego Padres from 2011 to 2014.
Byrnes began his front office career with the Cleveland Indians, serving as an advance scout from 1995 to 1996 before being promoted to Director of Scouting in June 1998.
He also held the position of assistant manager for the Colorado Rockies from 1999 to 2003, before transferring to the Red Sox organization, where he served in the same role from 2003 to 2005.
